APO Triplet Sale

Posted By Rod Kaufman

I purchased a Barska Magnus 80mm triplet APO from Amazon this evening(12-3) for $379.00 in their cyber deal. The optics have gotten very good reviews. Hope it works out to be a stellar deal! 8)

Planets through an Astro-Tech 72mm scope

You'd pick up some of the brighter moons around Jupiter and Saturn, along with the belts and rings that you'd expect to see. You would see some color variation on Uranus compared to the background stars and perhaps similarly with Neptune and phases on Venus. Other than the red color on Mars, I doubt if you would see detail. It would be fun to sweep with it and take in star clusters under a dark sky.

Expl sci AR102 refractor Vs orion starblast 6i

Posted By Rod Kaufman

James,
I've used the starblast and found it to be quite capable with good optics and contrast. Some of the parts for the mount were either duplicates or missing but Orion shipped out of the needed parts promptly. The intelliscope worked ok but you might need to do some fine tuning with the mount to getr the warp factor where you want it. Here's Ed Ting's review of it:
http://www.scopereviews.com/page1ae.html
I haven't used the ES 102acro but I've used similar relatively fast refractor scopes and I like them with appropriate filters to deal with the false color. Here's review that may help:

I'd personally go for the 6" starblast as a grab and go but I'm sure you'll probably enjoy either one...

Meade 6000 115mm and 130mm Reducer discontinued?

SO I just ordered my first Refractor a Meade 6000 115mm triplet for less than $2000 which considering the reviews and availability seemed like a bargain.

I figured at the time I could buy the Field Flattener later. Well to my surprise I learned that it's discontinued and Meade support had no answer about a replacement and said "they are working on it"

My question goes out to anyone that has purchased a suitable replacement and can tell me where to source as I bought this scope for imaging and well that's not going to be ideal if I can't find a flattener.

Another question is has anyone mounted a autofocuser on this scope? and if so which one?

Thanks in advance,
-Steve
You can try the generic astrotech flattener that goes for around $125-135. Check out Ed Ting's video that discusses it with astrotech 115 apo which is the same scope as yours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sE18PBQRzDQ&t=549s
