Floaters

Posted By Paul Kammueller

No -- I have fairly intrusive floaters myself, considerably more at 35 than I did at 25. The eye doctor says nothing really wrong, learn to live with it. Okay. They're really only a problem with planetary viewing, not with daily life.

The intrusion of the floaters into your planetary views rises seemingly exponentially as you increase power. This has been my observation too. I believe it's because the size of the 'floaters' in your eyeball are rising rapidly in proportion to the exit pupil of light getting into your eye -- in effect creating a 'secondary obstruction' right inside your eyeball. It's like having larger and larger tree branches in front of your scope as the magnification increases.

Turn your face down and shake your head a bit, this *can* reposition the floaters into less intrusive parts of your eyeball. They may still be too much though depending on how bad yours are. The only really decisive way to beat the floaters is to keep the exit pupil much bigger than the floaters -- this means either using lower power :-( or using same power with larger aperture :-)

Going from 4" to 10" I noticed a drastic decrease in 'floater' obstruction.

Attempted Fraud - Asking for PayPal info

Posted By Paul Kammueller

This is getting more common, unfortunately. Just follow this one rule:

NEVER, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER punch a reply to an email from ebay or paypal that requires putting in any account-related or password-type info, or click any link embedded in an email from ebay or paypal that automatically takes you somewhere. Don't use any checkout/paypal buttons that get emailed to you even if its by the seller you're buying from, even if it appears to come through ebay, or wherever, you don't know if it's real or what sort of plans he has for your future. The scammers have gotten skilled at creating lookalike websites so if you need to check out something just go into your web browser and independently go to your account to see what's going on or if you need to update or confirm something or whatever.

Rotation of Mars

Posted By Paul Kammueller

24 hours, 38 minutes and 22 seconds. So it appears to 'fall behind' us a little each day in rotation if you observe at roughly the same time every night.

July 30, 2003 Mars Sketch

Nice sketch, Sol!

Like your sketching style too -- sort of 'tarantulan' -- all those spikey bits makes Mars look spooky or haunted or something

Eyepiece Confession

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I don't have any Pentax or TV anythings -- My best 2 eyepieces are 16mm and 8mm konigs -- I also have a 12mm Intes wide-angle. These are all pretty nice but I must confess I got some of my best views last night using these with a $25 chinese barlow :-O
