A PST "Rust" Question

Posted By James Brown

Vince Clements said:

I have a PST and it was one of the first ones out. I sat on a waiting list for nearly 6 months waiting for them to be released. It does not have the rust issue but it is barely used. Out in the sun for a total of 10 hours. Were the lenses on the first ones out coated at Coronado? I have heard the coatings that failed were coated at another company. Is mine going to be fine or at some time in the future start to fail?

Interesting question Vince. I have one of the very first ones too. I have no rust, and I've used it quite a bit. If the very first batch had a better in-house cement job I would love to know it, since I have ordered an up-sized Ha rig and will soon be listing my PST for sale. The rust issues make selling a PST worrisome.

Imaging & the Moon

Sonya Ward said:

Hey guys,

How does moon light effect our images? Can you image at all with it out? I know we can filter some light pollution.
Sonya

Hi Sonya:

Deep sky images taken when the moon is bright will have a background light gradient toward the moon. Strong gradients are really hard to deal with. Also, the brightness of the general sky background on a bright moon night can get to the point where the faint target of your image is pretty much washed out. I think most people avoid full spectrum imaging when the moon is bright, I know I do.

Narrow band imaging (e.g. Hydrogen Alpha) works well when the moon is out. The extremely narrow pass-band of this type of filter blocks moon glare and light pollution both really well. A regular light pollution filter might help some on a bright moon-lit night, but I doubt it would help much. The reflected moonlight is full spectrum and will cause a gradient even if the selected frequencies the light pollution filter is designed for are blocked.

Good luck. Jim

Turret holder eyepiece

Hello,

Anyone have used a turret holder(takahashi,Borg,Intes..Tec)on your telescope? What experience you have? not is negative for the image?

Thanks,
Paulo

Hi Paulo:

I have a TEC turret that I use when I am not in the mood to bino-view. As far as I can tell, the image is exactly the same high quality as with my Televue diagonal. The TEC turret is superbly designed and beautifully machined too. It is fun to use.

Libby Trial/Bush's Hardcore Base

Posted By James Brown

Rod Kaufman said:

What's left of Bush's hardcore base (28% approval rating as per latest poll) is evidently taking a break from their bible study classes (advanced) in order to write to the judge in the Libby trial with such hatred that the judge is saving the mail in case something happens to him.
One wonders why they're acting so irrationally when, in all likelihood, Libby will receive a pardon from Bush, especially when you take into account Libby's wife has stated publically that if her husband does any time, they'll xxxx 'em if they don't get a pardon.
The Bush crew, in fine form....

Hi Rod:

I've enjoyed not playing in the politics forum recently. Leave it to you to post a Herculean non-sequitor and draw me out...

How the heck do you extrapolate from the judge's statement to your post? From:

"I received a number of angry, harassing mean-spirited phone calls and letters,"

to:

"What's left of Bush's hardcore base (28% approval rating as per latest poll) is evidently taking a break from their bible study classes (advanced) in order to write to the judge in the Libby trial with such hatred..."

I'm sure you know that 28% of Bush's base is about 17 million voters. If 100 fringe nut jobs wrote hate mail to the judge that's only about 0.0006% of Bush's "hardcore base". Presumably the other 99.9994% of Bush's "hardcore base" are minding their own business.

The real story here is whether or not Bush pardons Libby to cover and condone scandal. If he does, that stinks. The fact that his predecessor issued a historically unprecedented 100 pardons; many of them issued solely to cover up scandal, does not make this odious practice any less corrupt. Maybe, just maybe, Bush will display integrity in this matter. We shall see.
