I'm not sure why you're so focused on the death rate. It's only reported to be a total of 352,620 today and Trump says it's all "fake news"
so why worry about it?...

"Have you noticed how the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Montana, Iowa and the upper mid-west are trending in the correct direction? "
Really? I'm not seeing that...

Er, ah, I know what green means. Take Idaho, the topic of this thread for example. It has hit a record high, as has the rest of the country today or yesterday. It could be a few cases lower tomorrow and the day after and it'll be "green" as a result. It's still going ballistic. Ditto for many of the others. As for California, the epicenter for almost all of it is where it's usually been: the largest county in the USA: Los angeles county. 55% of the cases there and most of the deaths occur in its hispanic community. They tend to have large families living together and they don't socially distance especially on weekends and holidays. And that's why we have what we do...

I think we need to take another look at S Dakota: "Current hospitalizations are at 501, up from Tuesday (491). Total hospitalizations are now at 4,974, up from Tuesday (4,291)." "Wednesday’s new person tested positivity rate is 48%." "Only seven of South Dakota’s 66 counties are listed as not having “substantial” community spread."
in N Dakota: "The North Dakota Department of Health Tuesday morning confirmed 586 new cases of COVID-19 in the state during testing December 7, bringing the total positives since testing began to 85,688."
"The number of currently active COVID-19 cases in the state stands at 4,774 as of December 7. That’s up 16 cases from December 6."

"Both the number of deaths and the number of cases is rising fastest in areas President Trump won in 2020 and Republican congressional candidates carried in 2018. That may be a function of geography — Republicans perform better in rural areas, while Democrats do better in urban cores. It may also indicate that those living in rural areas are less likely to abide by recommendations from health experts to avoid social gatherings."

Looking at the Idaho:
"The data dashboard for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare shows Ada County’s COVID-19 incidence rate as one of the best in the state.
The daily number of new cases reported shows a raging outbreak.
The problem is that Central District Health has been inundated with so many cases that it’s nearly two weeks — and more than 2,500 case reports — behind in its data tracking."

I suspect other states have a similar problem.

"The country's average number of daily cases across a week was 215,729 on Wednesday -- a record high, Johns Hopkins University data show. That's more than three times what the daily case average was during a summer peak in July.
• Cases in one day: The US recorded 247,403 cases on Wednesday, a record for one day.
• Deaths: The nation averaged 2,569 deaths daily across the last week -- the highest average yet. The total reported Wednesday -- 3,656 -- is a one-day high.
• Hospitalizations: 113,090 Covid-19 patients were in US hospitals Wednesday -- the most recorded on a given day, according to the COVID Tracking Project.
