Sad, Sad times.

New York Times article 1/29/2010.

And nobody else is really in it. Oh, yeah, he's making pathetic noises about "private industry." The truth? Private industry has been just a few years away from orbiting astronauts...for the last 30 years. LOL

Basically this is a way to ease the United States out of the manned space business. OK. And what do we get in return? A high speed train in Florida which no one, I guar-ron-tee, will use.

F6.3 focal reducer?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Dan Petersen said:

Hi All:

I have some questions, just what exactly are these reducers doing to the SCT's wavefront and lightpath? Do they add chromatic aberration or reduce it? Do they slightly overcorrect or undercorrect the optics? Is their primary purpose to reduce spherical aberration, similar to the HST's corrective surgury? I have a 12" LX200 with undercorrected optics and way too much chromatic aberration, Damian Peach had this same problem with his 12" LX200, but to a lesser degree. What I'm really asking is will one of these reducers improve the view or make it even worse?

Thanks, clear skies! Dan grin

They do nothing (major, anyway) as far as chromatic aberration. If they did anything, they might add a little color, but I've never noticed such a thing. Nor do they mess with the wavefront error.

If you're seeing severe color with your LX200, I'd look to things like differential refraction, cooldown, and eyepieces/barlows. wink

mount pros & cons ?

Posted By Rod Mollise

John Meiners said:

Trying to see what mount works best for the Celectron 11" SCT. I the Nexstar uses the double arm yoke type design, where the CGE mount is more like the German EQ design. I used to have the older "Wedge" type mount I used with a C8 scope I did not like it, especially when viewing high twards the zenith.. conflicted with my diagonal/ep position... thanks for any suggestions ,John M

What do you want to do with it? Imaging? Visual only? Mix. The CGE has been discontinued, BTW.

change dovetails on a C9.25?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Karl Winkler said:

Anyone here know if it's possible to change dovetails on a C9.25? Specifically, from the CGE 3" dovetail to the CG5 1.75" version? I read somewhere that Baader sells dovetails but I wanted to check here first before jumping in.

Thanks!

IOW, change from a Losmandy D to a Vixen format dovetail? Yes, you can do that. Not recommended, but you can do it.

I have night blindness, looking for the right scope

Posted By Rod Mollise

Bill Hasan said:

Hello. I'm a new member of the group and have a question regarding the right scope for my vision deficiency. I currently have an 8" dobsonian that I built several years ago. I also have RP which is disease which affects the rods in my eyes (needed for peripheral and night vision). Unfortunately I can't see very many stars anymore and so it's quite difficult to manually find what I'm looking for unless someone else is around. I've decided to do astrophotography since my center vision still works fine and the images from the camera can help offset what I can't see through my eyes. I just recently purchased a used Canon 40D and I'm about ready to buy the telescope. I'm thinking of the Meade LX90 8" ACF. I want to take wide field pictures along with some deep space pictures.

So my question is, is this the right scope that will allow me to easily find what I want to shoot and also allow me to take decent pictures (assuming I set it up correctly and complete the post processing correctly)? Are there other options/scopes that I should be considering?

Thank you.
Bill

If you are not already committed to imaging with a CCD, think about a Stellacam or Mallincam deep sky video camera coupled to the LX90. That will allow you to "see" plenty on a video monitor--and you won't need a 200-inch a someone "helpfully" suggested. ;-)

How is this a new discovery?

Ronald Abraham said:

We may have more knowledge now about the sun's variability, but I learned about the sun being a variable star in the mid-1970s. Perhaps my professor was incorrect, but (evidently) back then scientists thought the multi-cyclical nature of the sun was a major factor in the coming and going of ice ages as well as the tendency of lesser, apparently cyclical climate changes.

There are many variable stars which exhibit behavior that would affect any "habitable zone planet" the same way our sun has been affecting ours.

Whether the Sun's (minor) variability affects weather/weather cycles has been talked about for a long time _but never proven_.

Most variable stars (the exception being eclipsing variables) are not like the Sun...they are evolved stars nearing the end of their lives.

Sending Autostar electricity from ETX-90PE

Posted By Rod Mollise

Takashi Yashiro said:

I use ETX-90PE (for Japan).
I failed update of Autostar(#497).
And, electricity do not reach Autostar.
I want to update my Autostar to latest ROM.
I saw http://www.weasner.com/etx/menu.html.
However, I could not find the method by which I can solve this problem.
Please teach me the method of sending Autostar electricity from ETX-90PE.

Electricity probably has nothing to do with it. Chances are you have trashed the firmware. What exactly happened when you tried to update it? The Safe Load procedure may allow you to reflash the PTOMs...(hold down enter and a scroll down key before you turn on the power to the scope). But before you do that, you need to figure out what went wrong with the update and why.
