Orion Astroview 8" -- need info

Posted By Paul Kammueller

You sure he doesn't actually mean the Skyview Deluxe 8" or the Astroview 6" instead?

In any event I'd expect it to be an f/4-f/6 equatorial newt.

Cutting PVC 12" tubing >> Salvage effort

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Circular saw is a little scarey for a task like this. But hand saw will be tedious, PVC that thick will be tough. Whatever you do maybe could smooth the cut edge down with a nice big metal file?

Finally, some decent seeing 15-Aug-2003!

I wouldn't go so far as to say they're connected, but in my 10" f/8 the separation at the southern edge of the becomes very indistinct, like there's 'almost' a bridge there -- but at certain moments they appear separate through and through. I think the contrast of the albedo features becomes much less at that extremity. The 'gap' overall has a very mottled and 'inconsistent' appearance to me.

Olympus Mons detail...

Posted By Paul Kammueller

WOW!!! Amazing, Jake. Just got back from a week-long vacation and just now checking in to catch up with posts. Hope everybody's had good observing!

While on vacation I got a beautiful scenic exposure of Mars setting over the early morning Badlands of South Dakota, a once-in-a-lifetime shot, and would have posted it here, if not for the fact that when it came time to reload the camera days later, we discovered it had no film in it. This caused me frustration beyond words, though I did utter a few choice words trying to express it anyway.

The Moon, Whats its name ?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Luna is also the Latin word for Moon, in other words, the "Roman" name, like other Roman names such as Jupiter, Ganymede, Callisto, etc.

This is why some people refer to the Moon's "name" as "Luna" although it's essentially just saying "Moon" in the ancient Roman tongue. It's satisfying to those who prefer to keep all the names in the original language.

We call the moon, "Moon", with a capital "M" to distinguish it from other planets or moons or to separate it from the generic term "moon" referring to just any natural satellite.

MARS was better in viewing - - a month ago.

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I haven't gotten out in a week so I can't say, but I just wanted to say kudos to you for hauling a C14 up a 9000 foot mountain and hoisting it onto a mount at that altitude without fainting.
