Camera Settings and Shutter Times for Eclipse

Posted By Andrew Chatman

Hi. My suggestion is to go to Michael Covington's website, go to the free software section within his Astronomy section, and download his free exposure calculator. The calculator gives suggested exposures for your specific setup, for various portions of the eclipse.

My next recommendation is to buy his book, Astrophotography for The Amateur. Worth its weight in gold.

My first M45 photo

Posted By Andrew Chatman

Tonight, I captured an additional 60 minutes (30x2-minutes) of M45, and integrated that data into last night's shot. Here is the result.

Astrophotography with Digital SLRs?

Posted By Andrew Chatman

Gary, as Ivan has said, many people are using consumer digital slr's for astrophotography. I recommend you join the following Yahoo Group, where you can see examples, ask questions, and research the archives for discussions that will help guide your purchase:

Cygnus Wide field

Mark, beautiful shot as always. It's a shame it appears that Albireo was just missed, it would have been icing on the cake. I really like the red response of the 10D. A very similar scale shot I took on film (FujiPress 800) has much less red response:

I want to take some piggyback shots with my D60. I'll have to be careful of my placement due to amp glow, though.

Keep it up. Andy

What alternate Tripod for Telepod head & np 101?

Posted By Andrew Chatman

I think you do want the 475. I use it with a telepod head and a Pronto. I had a lighter setup (a 3021 with a Bogen 410 gear head) but the combo just didn't have enough stability for me (and the Pronto and 410 are respectively lighter than the 101 and Telepod).

Good astro-gear shop between Syracuse<->Buffalo

Posted By Andrew Chatman

You can call Rowe Photo in Rochester (Mt. Hope Blvd.) to see if they have one. I know they carry Celestron. They're more of a photo shop, but they are the most reputable dealer of equipment around here.
