Nikon Lens advice

Posted By James Robinson

Thanks to everyone for the DSLR advice. It was a toss up between Canon and Nikon, I ended up buying a D70.

I apologize for another wide open question but any reccomendations for moderate priced "cpu" zooms? 400mm would be great, 300mm ok. Any experience with the 70-300mm Sigma (how can an APO anything be $200)? I will read all the reviews but nothing like first hand experience from folks doing the same thing I am with the camera.

I was disappointed to learn the exposure meter will not work with non-cpu lenses. I will have to learn to set exposure again with no aid 8O . Oh well, at least in the digital world I get instant feedback via the LCD.

Thanks

Common Grackle

Taken this evening in the marsh near my home. These are considered junk birds by some but I love the iridiscence, especially through the eyepiece.

Questar 3.5" mak and Nikon D70.

Ring necked ducks

Posted By James Robinson

Not a great shot, but a rare duck (at least around here) so I thought it was worth a post. I'll try to get closer next time. Heavily cropped they were so far away, even at 1250mm.

Great Heron

Posted By James Robinson

My first sighting of great herons this year. The lighting was bad, in the morning they were feeding on the east side of the road and in the afternoon they moved to the west.

I'm working hard at focus but I suspect the camera is never going to capture the full resolution of the scope. What I mean is there is much more detail apparent through the eypiece than I am capturing in the image.

American Robin + Dust Spec ?

Posted By James Robinson

Poorly framed, I know, and tree limbs in front. Best focus achieved thus far however. The bird was close, maybe 30 feet away.

The dark spec appearing on the lower tale feathers is present in all my pics, does this look like dust on the chip filter (Nikon d70)? I knew I would have to clean it but didn't expect to so soon.

Gold Finch (and new lens)

Posted By James Robinson

Just a goldfinch from the backyard. The lens however might interest the budget concious out there like myself. This was a handheld shot with a Pro-Optic MC 500mm f5.6 lens I recently purchased here on astromart. The exposure is 1/1250 at ISO 1000. At that speed I got lots of sharp photos even though my hand was shaking like crazy.

The shot is uncropped and basically unprocessed.

Green heron

Posted By James Robinson

This was taken at Pinckney Wildlife Refugee near Hilton Head. Its not ideally framed, I was photographing a nearby alligator when this bird landed in a tree behind me not 10 feet away. I was a bit nervous about turning my back on the alligator to be honest.

Another Pinckney NWR shot. Wish I could post the sounds these Moorehen were making.
