Black Forest Star Party....Who's In?

Posted By Alan Koff

Seems I was headed for a two week vacation when business got out of hand. Just found out that I'm expected to earn my keep and work Labor Day week through Thursday. Ugh! I thought I was the boss when the BIG BOSS informed me otherwise.
#*^% me! Of course, I couldn't find this out before the cut-off date and sell my reg.
So I think when I get back in town I'll cruise up to Ocracoke during the day on Friday. You wouldn't believe how dark the sky is there. Check the sky clock. Keep it under your hat.
You might still catch me at the South Jersey SP, if another hurricane doesn't follow me around.
3 hurricanes and 1 tropical storm.
Al
PS You can look for me at Howard's Pub....

Oberwerk 20x90 Binoculars - I like them!

Posted By Alan Koff

Barry, I know what you mean about the Obe 22x100s, they never delivered a sharp image. I went to their 15x70LWs which I truly enjoy as my 'all-a-round' Astro binos, and can be hand held for short periods.

apogee ra 88, small city skies

Mike, I have had a pair since early September and they can deliver some awesome views. M33, NGC 253, Planetaries and faint areas of fainter nebulosities from mag 6 skies. My mag 4 backyard shows the Ring and Helix nebs nicely at 32x, but I view to the west for this.
90 degree viewing is a wonder, but do yourself a favor and get Rigel's Quick-view finder for easy sighting. I also use a fork mount from Helix...you can see my rig in their customer pics page.

Mercury's Transit Weather Data

Posted By Alan Koff

Robert,
Weather, climate and forecasts are almost never what one predicts or expects.
I didn't expect to see the Venus transit due to a pessimistic weather forecast, but there it was anyway. Clear as a bell, at least in Myrtle Beach that day.
The previous Labor Day no one predicted this bad boy...... Might I suggest Baja.
Good luck where ever,
Al
