5 months and not a peep...

Posted By Michael O Gaynes

All I have are a pair of Grado SR80's which I sometimes use with a small portable amp, PA2V2 http://www.electric-avenues.com/audio8.html The Grados seem to change character quite a bit with different ear pads. I replaced the standard ones with a pair from Sennheiser.

I haven't heard the AKG 701's, but they seem to have been the rage for the last couple of years over at headfi.com. I'll be curious as to your impressions.

Though I don't generally listen to music with headphones - just movies on my laptop - the thought of scratch building a tubed headphone amp does intrigue me. Of course I still need to rebuild my main tube amp among a score of other projects...

JD...Rest in Peace

Posted By Michael O Gaynes

Ah, Tony, this is terribly sad news - my condolences to both you and your wife (and the rest of the pack).

The two of you gave JD a life he could never have expected. He lived (and was loved) more in the last year and a half than many dogs have rights to in much longer lifetimes. I'm sure even the rabbits will miss him.

Take Care,

Michael

What audio equipment do you own?

It took quite a long time to finally finish rebuilding this amp. It started as a kit amp from an Irish company called Arion. I wanted to replace the coupling capacitors and volume attenuator and that necessitated a new case. The project grew from there after a number of fits and starts.

The surprising thing is that it fired up the very first time. No smoke or sparks. What's the fun in that?

Now that they can drive, all I'm good for is scratching those areas they can't reach.

How long are we going to put up with this crap?

Posted By Michael O Gaynes

You make your living selling to birding and astronomy enthusiasts like myself. We often share public space and resources, city parks, etc. to engage in these interests that some may well look at with scorn and derision. The arts also share this space, often with the same goals of engagement, education, and simple joy.

Sure, the idea of painting trees blue may seem silly, the political notions naive, but there will be many who will be delighted and engaged by this project in the same way that many of us are in looking at the Orion Nebula or a pileated woodpecker.

I haven't gotten the sense in the articles that I've found online that much tax-payer money was going towards this - mostly private contributors and volunteers. If you have a public parks system, you have to provide for a variety of uses that not everyone will support or enjoy. That's life in a community.

If we wish for the general public to have respect for what we do, to take a moment to see the world through our eyes, binoculars, telescopes, and rifle sites, then we should do the same in return.
