Want Ads RULE!!!

Thanks to Astromart and other online astro-classified websites I was able to solicit my desire to buy peoples' UO
Widescan eyepieces. I thought there were no more out there at times as my want ads went unanswered. Then I tried a really wacky one and got my eyepiece! Now, thanks to want ad placing, persistence, generosity of the host websites, and buyers who were willing to answer my calls of desperation I have this binoviewer set of UO and Unitron Widescans. The ultimate most fulfilling accomplishment of my LIFE!!!

I don't know about the last couple of months but over the last few years, before I moved away, it was OK to excellent. The excellent planetary nights were rare. There was this very bad night when neither my 152ED nor an AP 6" starfire could split castor. Now that I am in Oregon, the good nights are pretty abundant, although it is seldom clear (but tonight was).

Send your 8" mirror to a custom place to have it refigured. Then put Protostar flock paper or baffles in your dob tube and replace its focuser with a nice one. Then add teflon and ebony star (or similar pebbled texture formica) to the mount bearings. Go get a nice UO Konig or Tele Vue plossl in 8mm and you will see some pretty darn awesome planetary images.

I am unbiased. Good Maksutov Newtonians are great . . . once they have cooled down. Images just like Apo refractors. Cooldown is the only flaw IMO.

I would say that the newer ones are better. The C9.25 is revered as being their best, and I agree.

No, they don't. Buy a good used one here and its price is only dependent on the market. Usually a good one won't depreciate. Some Apo refractors go up in value.

Orion, Celestron, or GTO 6" f/8 dobsonian mounted newtonian reflector would be my recommendation. Find one here in the classifieds for $200 or less.

Got an itch...should I scratch it??

Hmmmmm. Refractor rig for under 700 . . . that is tough. C102HD is all I can think of, or a C102 tube on a CG-5 mount with homebuilt wood legs. I had an awesome C102 that could take 100x per inch in good seeing and had sub arc second resolution on double stars. It was a really good little refractor. I let it go when I got my 152ED (meade). $$$ is your friend when you get the refractor itch.
