White-throated sparrow

Posted By ken blankenship

He was up in a tree - very hard to get the light correct and he's not so well focused. Anyway, it's a neat species to get here in Georgia. We have them, but not in great numbers.

Red-Winged Blackbird (?)

Here is a slighty different view. There is also an upward curve in the bill which is another good indicator for Red-Winged Blackbird.

Can someone identify?

Posted By ken blankenship

My money is on immature Sharpy - but I also thought of both Cooper's and even Red-shouldered. The tail is problematic - Sharpy tail should be obviously squared... can't tell. The banding on the tail leans away from red-shouldered, but the face, dark eyeline, and beak suggest it. Tip of tail looks white - Sharpy. Finally, the light eyebrow eliminates Coopers, and to me has more of a sharp-shinned look than RSHA (which is also a good 6" larger and the tree doesn't give away how large the bird was - that's a deciding factor!).

That's cool - Very tough ID, indeed.

Coastal Birds of GA

...and here's a Green Heron. In this one I really like how the grass in the foreground kind of creates a neat effect.

Taken at the same location by Rachel Cass. Neat little bird... love the "chicken tail"!

These photos and some other neat birding photography can be found at the "Name That Bird" Contest page. If you want to test your ID skills, come on over and check it out - we run it every week starting Monday with a new bird photo ID quiz. This week I think many folks will get 100% correct... that's good, makes it more fun 8)

Boat tailed grackle

When we visited the coast those things were just everywhere - being quite obnoxious smile But I do admit in the right light they are pretty cool. I like to call this photo (taken by Rachel Cass - my fiancee) "Mr. Tough Guy" because he was all puffed up trying to impress the ladies.

Cowbird?

Posted By ken blankenship

Yep... f. cowbird :C

Anyone got a bb gun? Well, actually I guess you just gotta hate 'em but not do anything, as they are at least native to N. America.

Starlings and house sparrows, however... beware!

"Beat it, ya jerk!!!"

Here's another shot from the side; more dianostic of the species if not a bit out of focus. Oh, well.
