Lagoon, Trifid, Sagittarius Star Clouds widefield

Posted By Greg Bradley

Was wanting to take this one and had to stay up late to get it.This is a 2:30am shot! (yawn) but near the zenith and thin cloud parted for a while. It was a race as more cloud was moving in - hahaha I beat the clouds!

Nikon 180mm ED Lens at F4, Nikon D70 modded, MI 250 mount, Baader UV/IR block filter, unguided.

7 shots at 60 seconds. Images plus, Nikon Capture editor. My backyard observatory, Sydney.

Trifid FS152 F6

Posted By Greg Bradley

Had another go at the Trifid the other night. It was nice and high in the sky.

13 x 45 seconds, two at 60 seconds. Takahashi FS152, Takahashi F6 focal reducer, MI 250 mount unguided, Nikon D70 modified, Baader UV/IR block filter, ISO 1600, measured white balance settings off a daylight shot.

Images Plus Nikon, Capture Editor.

Seems there is a lot more nebula that is blue than I have normally seen in shots.

M20 and M8 first light WO 80/480 fluorite triplet

Posted By Greg Bradley

I spent a bit of time setting up the gear for this one. William Optics 80/480 F6 TMB triplet fluorite. I found I was getting fairly colourless shots.

I set the white balance ot the Nikon D70 by imaging Alpha Centauri (a G2V star) and used that photo to set the white balance settings for the Nikon.

I experimented with and without the Baader UV/IR block out filter, with and without Celestron F6.3 reducer and found best results were:

90 seconds to 2 minutes unguided on MI 250.
With Baader UV/IR block. Native focal length at F6, white balance set to G2V star photo, ISO 1600, exposure compensation to 0, mode 3 exposures (turning off the camera after the shot with noise reduction on to "beat" the automatic median filter built-in to RAW mode in the Nikon).

Beautiful clear night in Sydney, high transparency and good seeing.

7 x 90 and 120 second shots. Shot heavily cropped, bit of coma at the edges that should be corrected by TV .8X flattener/reducer on the way.

This scope is starting to make me smile!! It is an ideal companion to the FS152.

Sagittarius widefield

Widefield heaven!

Sagittarius just gets better and better here until it is at its peak around July/August and is fully 3D right across the 10pm sky at the zenith.

50mm Nikkor lens at F4, about 7 shots at 30 seconds, modified Nikon D70.
