Anyone have experience with Omega Optical filters?

Posted By Larry Durst

I saw these while looking on ebay for random gear. Omega Optical, of Brattleboro VT, has all kinds of filters including narrowband 1.25" for $60. Just curious if anyone out there knows anything about them. Price seems too good to ignore.

M27 LRGB

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi All,
A wonderfully clear night after early patchy clouds. No moon. First use of new 48mm IDAS LPS. It really makes it easier to combine backgrounds. Just not sure I got the color right on this one, though. Also first time doing LRGB combination in PixInsight.
Details are here:

All comments and suggestions are very welcome (I'd say necessary!)

Reworked M27

Posted By Larry Durst

After posting my recent M27 here and on other forums, I got a few suggestions on how to round out my stars (only a couple of subs had elongations) and trying for more of a teal color. I finally got around to reworking it. Both versions can be seen here:

Not sure I'm there yet, so any additional thoughts are surely welcome!

Regards,
Larry

A different view of NGC281

There are many ways to play Pac-Man! Here's one I shot last night. There are some definite signs of guiding issues early on (went for ten minutes, then dropped down to 6). Feels good to finally post again!

Maybe after I finish repaving the driveway (which is my current observatory)...

Thought you all might enjoy this story:

Can you stand one more (Holmes that is)?

Posted By Larry Durst

I finally got the scope out (not to mention the binoculars--might just get me back to some visual astronomy!). I tried to bring the core out as best as I could using HDRWavelets in PixInsight on the luminance. MX716 with ZS66 SD. Photo attached, or here with full details:

All suggestions appreciated...this is my first comet image and it was a blast!

Anybody with any experience with CCD-Labs?

Posted By Larry Durst

In my long-suffering thinking about upgrading from my MX716 I now have my eye on these:

Same Sony chips as Starlight Xpress, USB 2, etc., etc. I have been very happy with my SX camera, but these sure are less expensive.
Any thoughts or experience are appreciated.

Old image, new processing technique

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi All,
I've been having lots of fun with the new HDRWavelets process in PixInsight, practicing on older images including a California Nebula that was one of my favorites. Actually, the application itself combined with the excellent Pixinsight tutorials have really opened my eyes to an entirely different approach to processing nebula; rather than going for the greatest extent and billowy, well, nebulosity I now find it far more interesting to try and peer through the curtain and find the structures that lie within. I must say that quite quickly PixInsight has become my program of choice for almost all post-processing.

I'm curiuous if any of you think this is an improvement. My own opinion actually varies with the monitor the images are viewed on. All comments and suggestions are appreciated. Old and new images are here (requires some scrolling):

Thanks for looking,

Ha with RGB experiment

Posted By Larry Durst

Well, I should be out shooting but an impending storm sent clouds early, just 20 minutes into the Red channel of M45. New images will have to wait. Instead I'll offer up this experiment I did on combining Ha with RGB as my early efforts using Ha as the L were never very pleasing. I had meager data to work with so not a very fair test, but thought you might enjoy it.

IC410 The Tadpoles in Ha

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi All,
Finally a clear night and I wanted to get to a galaxy, but...shot this for one hour while waiting for another target to clear my house. As the notes on my site say, I should have stuck with it all night. My other target, NGC2403, was much fainter and tougher than I bargained for...will post if I can get something from my data. In the meantime...here are the Tadpoles. Full details, including some new processing tricks, at:
http://www.freewebs.com/drivewayastronomy/latestimages.htm
Thanks for any feedback,
Larry
