Does time "pass" -- or is it just "there"?

It's funny you should bring consciousness into this as it's one of the things I've always wondered about and tried to figure out how to define as I've never found a satisfactory definition elsewhere.

In talking about time, energy and information, it occurs to me that consciousness is really the 'moment' when energy is effectively converted to information, or forces matter into an organized state such as constitutes organized information in the brain.

In other words, through the ages men have tried to define consciousness as a 'thing' whether through some abstract concept like a 'soul' or something as concrete as brain cells -- whereas maybe it's more of an 'event' -- like a phase change of 'something' else.

Equipment you most regretted selling.....

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I most regretted selling my old ca. 1977-1980 orange-tube C8 which was my first 'real' telescope (until then I'd had a 60mm refractor from Monkey Wards). Had very sharp optics, it absolutely clobbered a small TV apo I had and I would push it to 400-800x on the moon sometimes if seeing was exceptional. Had to sell it at a deep discount (internet was not yet a place to sell things) in my last year of college to pay for repairs on a crummy old car that's been long since gone. I still miss that classic old "orange and grey" Celestron look. Memories... :-(

Mars 09-Sep-2003

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Doug - a very nice sketch. Yup you're addicted! Keep going while the drive is there! I think my addiction is gone for this opposition so I haven't been posting much. After 42 sketches and being up late night after night after night for the last month or two I just feel done and completely burned out on Mars. Besides the seeing here has gotten considerably worse lately it seems. Everyone keep up the good work. I'm spent.

Is Bush trying to get us all killed?

The enemy of my enemy may be my friend, but the enemy of my friend is not necessarily my enemy -- particularly if my friend may not continue to be my friend for much longer.

Best improvements in performance

"I for one would say EPs were the biggest improvement I found. "

Selling my most expensive eyepieces to buy a bigger mirror resulted in my best improvement in performance. :-)

Please stop looking for an anti-semite under every rock. Being critical of Israeli policy does not make one a racist.

Your extrapolation to Judas/Jesus etc. is quite a leap from the original post. You can call anyone a racist if you put enough words into their mouth.

Woodworking tools: What's needed, practical ?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

My 10" dob was the first time I've done any woodworking since making a rotten spice cabinet in the 9th grade. I was able to get by with these tools:

1) Hammer
2) Screwdriver
3) Cheap cordless drill
4) Fairly cheap hand jigsaw
5) Free hand-me-down circular saw from my brother-in-law who upgraded

There are plenty of tools that would have made the job easier, like a table saw as mentioned by some. But it's hard to buy tools if you've spent your tools money on optics. :-)

"Belief" vs. "Organized" Religion

Maybe, I had forgotten -- so long ago I don't remember. We never rehash old arguments on this forum now, do we? ;-)
