Leitz EP

I knew they made some supposedly FINE zoom EP's......Did not know they also offered EP's like this one. Is that a realistic asking price or is this guy living on a different planet? smile

While I love a great EP.....if the best gets into that ballpark I now know one thing for certain....I will never own the best, maybe 2nd best sad

Good? Yeah, especially considering this was not originally designed to be an astronomical eyepiece. On anudder planet? Yeah, unless you are just gobsmacked by the idea of havin' an eyepiece that says "Ernst Leitz" on it. There is something to be said for that, but this is NOT an Ethos. wink

Dark skies VS Aperture???

Posted By Rod Mollise

From what I've seen of your city skies, I'd have to say "8-inch SCT" from the Catskills (I might think long and hard about selecting the LS to BE that SCT unless/until Meade gets the last of the bugs out of its LightSwitch software, though).

Is the C8 too heavy for a Vixen GP?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Slawomir Bucki said:

I am in the process of buying a C8 SCT OTA that I am planning to put on a motorized Vixen Great Polaris (older model) mount. However, I am concerned that the C8 might be a bit too heavy for the GP mount. Currently I am using the mount with a C6 OTA, and this combination works great, with very precise tracking. I calculated the total weight of the C8 OTA + finderscope + diagonal + eyepiece, and it adds up exactly 15 lbs, which the max. load capacity of my mount.

Does anybody here have experience with using the Vixen GP mount carrying an 8 inch SCT OTA (C8 or similar)? Any issues? Any problems with the mount's longevity?

Regards.

S. Bucki

The GP is well suited to the C8. Even the SP was at least sufficient.

I suspected not, not on the short end. Cool lookin' bugger. Don't know what I'd DO with it, but a cool lookin' bugger nevertheless. wink

2x Barlow (not a shorty) question

Posted By Rod Mollise

Roland Beard said:

I have a couple Barlows of the short type. When used with a astrovideo camera, the camera picks up some internal reflections. Folks tell me that the regular length Barlows have much less likelihood of stray light getting down the longer light path. I don't have any experience with the longer type. If it's a major manufacturer product, are the longer Barlows about the same in performance or can anyone recommend something they prefer?

I don't think there's any guaranteed difference between short and long vis-a-vis reflections. Certainly I've never had a problem with my Shorty. But it is decently blackened internally.

auction vs. best offer

Posted By Rod Mollise

In what way is this not an auction? You set a minimum bid and will accept the highest bid you get. That is an AUCTION. And belongs in the Auction section.

Nextar 8 sle can it be manually operated?Good 1st

Posted By Rod Mollise

This telescope doesn't have manual slow motions. It can be operated without the computer go-to by using the direction buttons on the hand control, but it's not well suited to being moved by hand without power.

Tell your friend to maybe look at the Celestron Omni XLT 127:

No, this "feature" has been available for a while for some ISPs. My reaction? You must not want email from me, so I'm not a-gonna bother with you. It's especially infuriating to be emailed a request for help, questions, asked a favor, etc., and get this in response. Short and sweet for me (most of the time, anyhow)...the good, ol' KER-PLUNK. LOL!

Cheap source of planispheres

Posted By Rod Mollise

Andreas Saldivar said:

On May 15 some friends and I are going to do an astronomy night for about 20-25 girl scouts. This will help them get their astronomy badges. Part of the program is teaching them to use a star chart. I wanted to use planispheres but each one I found was too expensive. That is until I was pointed towards this link.

http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp?pn=3009227&cmss=planet+locator

You can get 25 8" planispheres and instruction booklets for $49.95 plus shipping. That's a good deal.

Andreas

It is...I use these with my university students, and they are cheap enough that I can give them to them to keep..

But if you really don't need a planisphere per se, just an all-sky chart, you can go to skymaps.com and print all you need for free.

Mongolian Humanitarian Crisis

Your point? We should decide that one (or a dozen) cold winters in Outer Mongolia means there is no climate change? We should give money to the Mongolians? What? wink
