Former Republican officials float possibility of forming 'center-right' party

Or the far right Trumpers going on their own.... who will keep the name 'Republican' and who will have to find a new name?

The "First Past the Post" voting system is never kind to 3rd parties - they just become spoilers... we have had that here in Canada for decades - the Conservative and Liberal parties sort of alternate governments with the NDP flailing around in 3rd place pretty much permanently....

Given all that we're seeing unfold before us, the general concept in your post is a likely possibility. Take the impeachment trial, for instance. The cons on the forum haven't watched it but are commenting on it. A number of GOP senators could care less and will vote no, period. The rest of the nation, not to mention the world, are watching and the majority of voters who elected Biden are also the ones likely to elect the next president. The nuts in the GOP aren't going to change so that faction in the party will not adapt and modify its behavior. They're more likely to become a fringe element over time and many of them think Trump will regain the presidency on March 4th. The net result will be a split in the Republican party...

Yup, we're already seeing it: "Nikki Haley breaks with Trump: 'We shouldn't have followed him"

Former Republican officials float possibility of forming 'center-right' party

Posted By Rod Kaufman

"A group of more than 100 former Republican officials have discussed the possibility of forming a conservative party due to their unhappiness with the direction of the GOP under former President Donald Trump and the likelihood he'll be acquitted at the end of his second impeachment trial, according to Republicans who participated in the conversation."
"the Zoom call that included former officials who served in the GOP administrations of Trump, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, and Ronald Reagan talking about the Republican Party's future and the possibility of forming a center-right breakaway party."""Clearly, there are a number of Republicans like myself and other Republican leaders, who want a clean break from President Trump, and we are kind of rallying around some core founding principles like truth and honesty, and democracy, and rule of law,"

With Biden going big, Wall Street economists are growing bullish on the US economy

Posted By Rod Kaufman

"Super-charged fiscal policy" means the argument for the US economy growing faster than its peers "seems to get stronger day-by-day," economists at Bank of America wrote in a recent report to clients."
"Oxford Economics chief US economist Gregory Daco is calling for a "summer mini-boom" in the United States and 5.9% GDP growth in 2021.
Likewise, Jefferies economists say "explosive income growth (courtesy of fiscal stimulus) is likely to propel US GDP 6.4% higher this year and nearly 5% next year."
"If anything, our forecast might be too conservative," Jefferies told clients in a recent note, pointing out that its view incorporates just $1 trillion of the Biden plan.
Indeed, Goldman Sachs upgraded its 2021 GDP forecast to 6.8% earlier this week"

" If Goldman's prediction comes true, it would be the fastest annual GDP growth for the United States since 1989, according to the St. Louis Fed."

McConnell Defends His Decision To Acquit Trump...

Posted By Rod Kaufman

"Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in a Wall Street Journal op-ed Monday defended the Senate's decision to acquit former President Trump but clarified that it, "vindicated the Constitution, not Trump."
"There is no question former President Trump bears moral responsibility. His supporters stormed the Capitol because of the unhinged falsehoods he shouted into the world’s largest megaphone," McConnell wrote. "His behavior during and after the chaos was also unconscionable, from attacking Vice President Mike Pence during the riot to praising the criminals after it ended."
"But McConnell went on in the piece to argue that convicting Trump was not protected by the Constitution because he is a former official."
So, by McConnell's logic, a sitting president can carry out an egregious act and be impeached for it but the day after he leaves office he simply can't be convicted for it.
In other words, because he couldn't find a specific sentence in the constitution that says he he could, he can't!
Frankly, I think it's a safe bet Mitch would have voted to acquit even if the framers of the constitution had thought it necessary to state the obvious anyway...
