Some fog of war reporting time has passed, and it's looking like now that the main cause of the disaster is a failure to winterize equipment. A lot of people are howling about this. However, from what I have read, Texas never winterizes its equipment to the extent that it could survive a storm like this. It's prohibitively expensive and greater than 95% of the time unnecessary. My house guests have all been able to return home without any major damage to their homes, and we are grateful we never lost power or water. I still have no idea how we got so lucky since one-third of the households in my zip code did lose power at one time or another.
