Church/state: result of non-separation

Posted By Paul Kammueller

or to put it another way :

As a practical matter, do church and state, faith and government, have ANYTHING AT ALL to do with each other, some inherent connection that necessitates the commingling that some zealots seem to desire?

Who makes the best secondary mirror?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Antares (Astromart sponsor) makes very nice secondaries with a variety of accuracies (1/12th to 1/30th wave) and prices them according to wavefront error. I have one in my 10" f/8 planetary newt. www.antaresoptics.com

D & G Optics

Posted By Paul Kammueller

D&G is a very well-known and highly regarded manufacturer of premium long-focus achromatic refractors for serious refractor buffs. You can find a review of their 5" f/12 at www.cloudynights.com... They make bigger ones too. ;-)

Do dark skies REALLY matter?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Dark skies really do matter. But now that I have dependents it's not important enough to risk falling asleep at the wheel on my way home from a dark-sky site at 3 a.m. anymore. So these days I just observe from my light-polluted backyard. I finished most of my deep-space galaxy-cluster hunting in my 20's anyway. I'm a planetary guy now. :-)

If you're young and single and have a six-pack of Mt Dew in the car, I say drive to a dark sky site if you can!

Stolen 30-inch Starmaster

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Hopefully the jerk(s) will be caught. A 30" scope is a pretty conspicuous item to swipe, with the likely intent being to sell, and is not the sort of thing that they can just unload on their local pawn shop. Will definitely be on the lookout here and on certain auction sites for something "hot".

Meteor or Not!

If there's a local college you could get a positive ID from the geology professor. They get this all the time.

Proud Papa

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Isn't that fun? :-)

During the recent lunar eclipse, my 5-year-old daughter had her first real look through a telescope, my Criterion RV-6 pointed at the moon at its lowest power during totality. It being a newtonian, she thought it very strange that she could see the moon by looking sideways into this big white tube.

She still won't go near the 10" f/8 though. The height of the eyepiece terrifies her!

8" mirror info - questions

Posted By Paul Kammueller

It may be an R.F. Royce conical mirror? (could that "P.F." be an "R.F."?) I'd guess the P3+.22 indicates a 0.22 wavefront peak-to-valley rating (1/4 to 1/5 wave). The 629 indicating the testing wavelength?

Supplier of Japanese glass

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Optron, they're in Japan. I believe they make lenses for Vixen, Mizar, and some Takahashi (though Tak gives theirs a final super-fine figuring that the others don't).
