ANALYSIS FINDS THAT STATES WITH REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS HAD HIGHER CASE AND DEATH RATES

In general, I agree although I don't believe it's as black and white as one might think. Looking a DeSantis boasting about previous lockdowns in other states compared to Florida, an interesting fact check explains it more objectively: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/dec/02/ron-desantis/florida-doing-better-covid-19-locked-down-states/
Although that was at the end of last year, I think it helps explain some of the discrepancies we've seen. Additionally, I've been following Idaho and Florida daily and their case counts and/or positivity rates have been increasing.

“Governors’ party affiliation may have contributed to a range of policy decisions that, together, influenced the spread of the virus,” says study senior author Sara Benjamin-Neelon, PhD, professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Health, Behavior and Society. “These findings underscore the need for state policy actions that are guided by public health considerations rather than by partisan politics.”

I'm picking on Idaho because they're going out of their way to makes things worse by their own behavior.

I am trying to convince Rod that his irrationally partisan theme of the week (that R governed states are a disaster, compared to D governed states) is not supported by the data.

I applaud Whitmer for cautiously opening up business in MI.  My main recent point in these two threads, (other than checking Rod) is that public policy has to be a balancing act between economic concerns and public health concerns.  Faucci has a great point, but he is mandated by his role and training to weigh public health concerns only.  The governors have to also consider the economic concerns.  Not an easy job.

I like the way our D governor has handled things in CO.  I suspect that the N and S Dakotan's like the way the Dakota R governors have handled their states, even though they clearly weigh economic concerns over public health concerns more than my governor does.  It shows in the respective deaths/M, although I have not read of the SD Governor's constituents calling for her head...  IMO The agility of the states to act independently is a good thing about our union.

Jim
Florida is doing its best to catch up: 4,599 new cases today for a total of 1,989,024 cases and "The number of Florida resident deaths has reached 32,504, an increase of 55 since Tuesday's update. In addition, a total of 616 non-Floridians have died in the state." Non Floridians? Visitors who just happened to get covid and die while on the Florida soil? Ya gotta to hand it to DeSantis on his state government's reporting of the covid stats...

Hmmm.
Seriously? Why don't you tell that to the hospital staff at the ICU in Idaho that's scrambling for covid beds in the number 1 hotspot in the country...
Hmmm.

It might make you feel superior to pick on your smaller neighbors, but state wide, Idaho is doing about the same as other states, which is presently pretty well.  Idaho's hospital situation is better than California's, but that is probably an indictment of your crappy state government than it is any kudos to Idaho.  Of course these ICU numbers from John's Hopkins are a lot better across the board than last time I posted them.  Vaccinating the older population is no doubt making a huge difference.   Jim
My point, again, is that Idaho, specifically the behavior of its citizens in general and of the republicans in the state in particular, is the cause of the spike within the state. In addition, knowing the situation elsewhere in larger population centers like California, the GOP leadership in Idaho has gone out of its way not to take a clue from it but rather to ignore it and divest itself of any science-related directives to take a bad scenario and improve upon it...

The second shot of moderna wasn't too bad for me. Some arm soreness at the injection site, a mild intermittent headache and some fleeting pains here and there. The latter was on the second day after the injection and no problems afterwards. BTW, Fox's top producer just died from covid, probably after buying into the Fox crew's anti-vaccer campaign. I bet the rest of the crew has been vaccinated even as they rail against it...

Idaho, patron state of anti masker mask holes, has numbers that can prestage a surge: https://www.ktvb.com/article/news/local/208/idaho-covid-7-day-average-up/277-fd3ba78c-8af3-4f70-b256-e5488e3343fb
