M108

Posted By Rod Mollise

Scott Anderson said:

I was star hopping my way to the Owl nebula and I noticed M108 in the same field. Neither of these have I seen before, my scopes were too small.

Don't be too sure...I've easily seen both in an ETX 60 on a decent night from a fair site.

HD Optics

Posted By Rod Mollise

Mark Davis said:

Sorry if this has already been covered.

The HD optics on the SCT's are going to be superior for the astrophotography minded person but are they superior for a visual observer like myself?
Would you benefit shelling out for a C14 EDGE HD or purchase a C14 XLT?

Thanks.

Only you can answer that. Visually, they will be fairly noticeably better at the field edge than a stock SCT. They will be slightly better than an f/6.3 r/c equipped C8.

Me? My next SCT will be an Edge or an ACF.

Defork a C8?

Posted By Rod Mollise

paul martins said:

I have a C8 with the byers worm gear but no tripod.

I am debating whether or not to spend money to get the tripod and wedge or if I should mount the scope on an eq mount.

I see a few used C8 mounts from deforked units for sale so I can only surmise that people have been deforking these.

But why?

I have seen a cg-5 and I find it hard to believe that its tiny gear sets perform better than the byers drive.

Even on bigger eq mounts, the gears are smaller.
How can they track more accurately with smaller gears?

Or do people defork them because they are too unstable with the stock tripod?

Why? The CG5 has go-to, and the gears onboard perform similarly to what you get with the Celestron Byers (half) worm sets.

S&T on DVD

Posted By Rod Mollise

Darian Rachal said:

Wasn't sure if this has been discussed somewhere on the Forums, but I'm sure everyone knows that the entire collection of S&T is available on DVD ROM. When I was at LSU back in the 70's they had the entire collection in the library. There's a lot of good information there. Anybody planning to get this?

Me.

I just bought a SPC900NC off astromart...installed the softwre CD..and using AstroCapture to control it...worked beutifully when I used it indoors without a telescope..but when I put on the adapter and hooked it up to the telescope...I looked at trees maybe 1000 feet away through a glass window, and had a white screen...wasnt able to get it to focus...focusing from infinity to close focus and still nothing. Any suggestions? The guy I bought it from told me it was modified..
thanks

Yeah, cut way back on the exposure, and focus again.

Installing Neximage Driver and Software

Posted By Rod Mollise

robin woolsey said:

I recently purchased a Neximage CCD Camera. I have not been able to get a driver installed and now my computer will not even recognize the camera as new hardware. I am using Windows Vista 32 bit operating system. Don't know if the imager is bad or if I'm doing something wrong. The Amcap and Registax programs appear to load on my desktop, but that's as far as I get. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

It MAY work with the 32 bit version, I haven't tried it. The reason it's not "recognizing" the camera anymore is likely cuz it loaded up some kind o' driver. Go into hardware manager, see what it installed delete that, and try again.

Tips: follow the instructions with your software exactly. Do NOT plug in the camera till it says to. If possible, run the software as administrator at set it to XP compatibility mode if possible (right click menu on the program's icon).

Celestar 8 Setting circles

Posted By Rod Mollise

Steve Vallin said:

O.K. Heres a question. I NEVER level my Celestar 8 wedgepod when polar aligning for visual use. If I wanted to try using the setting circles would I need to level the wedgepod?

Steve.

No...leveling makes no difference whatsover. What makes the difference with analog circles? As close a polar alignment as you can manage (which also doesn't require leveling).

Are "Tests" Really Necessary?

Why would an omniscient God need to give us a test of our morals?

Dunno. Let me ask my friend the purple-spotted unicorn what He things. :-)

First time mirror grinding...

Posted By Rod Mollise

Tony Aguire said:

I am going to give mirror grinding a shot with a 4.25 in blank and tool purchased from a gentleman here on Amart, any suggestions (besides reading lots of books!) from veterans out there? I figure this size would be forgiving to start with, any suggestions on f ratio etc?

Thanks and Clear Skies

1. KEEP IT CLEAN.

and...

2. Build/buy the best Focault Tester you can...

Oh...and whichever books you have, get a copy of Sam Brown's _All About Telescopes_ to go with 'em.

In general, mirror grinding, polishing, and figuring is FAR, FAR easier than you may believe or may have been led to believe.
