Remember CO2 is green, think about it.

Do your research, go back to the fifth grade study of plants and animals. You'll find that CO2 is green.

Yep. Green as in greenHOUSE. LOL!

Why do Atheists...

Posted By Rod Mollise

William Paolini said:

So my question is, why do atheists spend so much time concerned with what non-atheist groups are doing?

One website's forum is not a very good indication of what all atheists or even some atheists do or think.

If you want a reason _some_ atheists want to discuss religion, it's maybe because religion, or the religionists anyhow, SOME OF THEM, spend so much time trying to figure out how to change our minds. And bad-mouthing us to high heaven (can I use that word?) LOL!

Maybe if you-all stopped worrying so much about us, and stopped trying to inject your silly beliefs (in our opinion) into the public arena we'd stop worrying about _you_.

When you guys try to bring religion back into the public schools and into government, you shouldn't be surprised we are going to raise our voices about you. I know I will. wink

telescope virgin seeks grab-n-go for 1st night

hello all,
im a newbie to the fascinating world of telescopes,
tho have done my homework,
and read most introductory websites on the subject,
got binos,
and learned the sky basics.

Best advice I can give you? Don't buy ANYTHING...not yet. Your city has a large, excellent, and very active astronomy club. Join, and pick the members brains and check out some of their telescopes before you jump. Some of them will be living in exactly the same circumstances as you, and the good folk of the AAC will help you.

It is EXTREMELY unlikely you damaged the coatings. Especially if you used blue Windex.

Orion 4.5

Over the years I have had four 8" and three 6" dobs. Thought another 8" (Skyquest XT8) would be fun so I bought another. Not so good as I am now apartment dweller and not a homeowner. So out it went. Then I came across a Skyquest 4.5. What fun!!! Easy to carry and setup. Very fast cool/warm up time. Great optics!!! Was going to sell this one too but I think I'll keep it in the stable a while longer. BTW, I do use it on a 5 gallon weighted bucket and use a lawn chair to view. What fun.

It is a genuinely good little telescope. I was in a similar situation a couple of decades back, and was amazed at what I was able to see--with a little work--with a 4-inch reflector under generally poor skies.

Vatican revisions

Darin Joeckel said:

Not too long ago I asked why women could not be ordained as priests and got no answer. Well, late last week the Vatican answered my question. Evidently, trying to ordain women as priests is as grave of an offense as pedophilia! I'm speechless. What do you guys think? Here's a link and please read it. I'm not making this stuff up:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/16/world/europe/16vatican.html

What do I think? I think you have a hidebound church run by frightened, foolish old men. They cannot see that ordaining women and allowing all priests to marry is the path for the survival of their church in the West. Or maybe they can, but that would involve that dreaded CHANGE.

On the face of it, such an analogy is DISGUSTING.

How Far does Freedom of Religion Extend?

This couple has had their baby taken away because they withheld medical treatment for a serious condition in the baby, favoring faith healing: http://www.oregonlive.com/oregon-city/index.ssf/2010/07/post_2.html

Do you think this couple is within their rights by letting their baby suffer and possibly die from this condition?

No. Murder because of superstition is still murder in my book.

3rd humble question

Posted By Rod Mollise

There is a simple answer. There are plenty of people here, some of whom you've already met, who don't just want to believe in supernatural gods and goddesses, but who also want to believe in the literal infallibility of a book writen by a nomadic people of the Bronze Age. And who want to apply its "teachings" and "laws" to the present day. Which is difficult even for them, which results in rationalizing, cherry-picking, and dissimilation. There is nothing more to it than that. wink

CG5 ASGT Connector Problem

Posted By Rod Mollise

Jon Isaacs said:

I don't use my CG-5 ASGT a lot but last night when I took it out, I found that the power connection was intermittent. If I pulled the cord to one side, it would make a continuous connection but if just left to it's own devices it was on and off.

I know that this is a relatively common problem with these. I am using a non-standard cord that has worked in the past. I am planning on taking it apart but would like some thoughts about what the problem may be.

Is it likely a broken solder joint or maybe just a poor connector design??

Thanks

Jon

Neither. Some cord connectors are not quite the right size for it.

Here's what you do... take a small knife or a jeweler's screwdriver and gently spread the halves of the mount-side connector's pin a bit. Problem solved. wink
