Global warming compared to what period of Earth's

There was an interesting segment on 60 minutes tonight on the arctic seed bank. Basically, many of the seeds of various grains, fruits and vegetables are being stored in a huge vault or bunker in an area that has 30 degree below zero weather and the bunker itself is being cooled further with air conditioning. The scientists are counting on it to help save humanity when the anticipated lethal effects of global warming hit the planet in a hundred years or so...

After reviewing a number of threads in this forum regarding cold weather and how it can occur with GW (with China freezing over and other inane examples) and so forth, it appears it may be constructive for those who don't wish to remain ignorant to consult the NOAA website for some basic information that explains what is going on:

John Bowers Kayak Expedition

KNX news radio interviewed John Bowers via satellite telephone today. John, a world-renown kayaker reported from Anarctica on the effects of global warming. Basically, 90% of the world's ice is said to be located in Anarctica. John interviewed team after team of scientists documenting massive recession of the ice cap. During today's interview, he noted that global warming is causing rainfall instead of snowfall, which is further degrading the ice pack. The KNX news reporter asked John about the effects on local wildlife. As it happened, John was camped near a penguin rookery. The rainfall is soaking the down-covered penguin chicks, and, as you know, down loses its insulating properties when it becomes wet. When the rain stops, the likely outcome is that the chicks will freeze to death. The penguins, sensing impending disaster, are attempting to move their entire rookeries further South.
