I'm not surprised. Rich and powerful men who cheat is of course not news. Here is why it matters though. The press uncovered this secret because of the amateurish bungling of the cover-up. If the media can figure this out, then what other secrets do foreign powers, such as Russia, have on Trump? Men with this kind of past are routinely denied security clearances because they are vulnerable to blackmail. If anyone doubts that personal moral behavior is vital to politics, then consider the recent Rob Porter case, or for a more historical example, consider the case of Alexander Hamilton whose affair prevented him from ever seeking the office of the Presidency. The denials, the amateurish cover-up, the dishonesty, it all just underlines the corruption and incompetence that has characterized Trump's presidency.

Sadly, I don't think we have reached bottom yet. The only consolation we have in all of this is that Trump will most likely come to regret McCabe's firing almost as much as he should regret Comey's firing. McCabe also kept contemporaneous memos regarding his interactions with Trump. Can anyone think of a special counsel investigator who might be interested in talking to McCabe? Trump politicized the firing in an extremely humiliating, vindictive and public way, so any accusations about him carrying out a political vendetta seem entirely justified. Especially after he just celebrated it on twitter.

Strictly speaking, this was not a "good guy" or a teacher with a gun. This was an armed school resource officer who is a sworn law enforcement officer who is responsible for providing security, and there is nothing new about this approach. The first documented SRO was put in a school in 1953. SROs are now commonplace in schools, and they are not controversial.

The real story is that this leaked at all. It has to be a small circle of people that knew about the DO NOT CONGRATULATE warning. There is no chaos though! Only good energy!

BOSTON (AP) — Assault weapons and large-capacity magazines are not protected by the Second Amendment, a federal judge said in a ruling Friday upholding Massachusetts' ban on the weapons.

U.S. District Judge William Young dismissed a lawsuit challenging the 20-year-old ban, saying assault weapons are military firearms that fall beyond the reach of the constitutional right to "bear arms."

Regulation of the weapons is a matter of policy, not for the courts, he said.

"Other states are equally free to leave them unregulated and available to their law-abiding citizens," Young said. "These policy matters are simply not of constitutional moment. Americans are not afraid of bumptious, raucous and robust debate about these matters. We call it democracy."

State Attorney General Maura Healey said the ruling "vindicates the right of the people of Massachusetts to protect themselves from these weapons of war."

"Strong gun laws save lives, and we will not be intimidated by the gun lobby in our efforts to end the sale of assault weapons and protect our communities and schools," Healey, a Democrat, said in a statement. "Families across the country should take heart in this victory."

One of my favorite blasts from the past is Jim Babcock. If I recall correctly, he has passed on, but he was a real champion for the conservative cause. He could promote conservative ideology tirelessly.

It is not possible to defend the Iraq war based on a humanitarian crisis or the violation of UN resolutions. There are countless examples of these kinds of sins in the world, and yet the US does not try to intervene in every one. The reason for the Iraq war was because of a bunch of ideologues who had become obsessed with deposing Saddam Hussein gained positions of power in the Bush administration. In the climate of the post 9/11 world and a rush to accept questionable intelligence without hesitation, these ideologues could only see confirmation for their views. The lesson of the Iraq war is not that Bush lied and people died; instead, it is that ideology and groupthink and ambition can take on a life of its own and lead to egregious mistakes where you fool yourself into thinking you are doing the right thing. By any measure, the Iraq war and its aftermath have been anything but successful. From Abu Ghraib to the rise of ISIS, to the expanding influence of Iran in the region, to the countless civilians who died, to the utter chaos and lawlessness that existed in Iraq for far too long due to inadequate planning, and so forth and so on, it's hard to imagine anyone would now think it was a success.
