Boat tailed grackle

Posted By James Robinson

I like observing Grackles through a scope, what appears to be a flat black becomes a cool iridescent.

Again from Ibis Pond in Pinckney NWR, D70 with 500mm f/6 mirror lens.

Goldfinch (another lens test)

Posted By James Robinson

I picked up another budget "mirror lens" on AMart to complete my collection. This one an Astro Rubinar 1000mm f/10. I'm very pleased with it for the price, I'm becoming a real fan of these cat lenses. The photo is a little grainy as I was shooting at ISO1600, the one downside to the f/10 ratio.

ID challenge -- sparrow?

Posted By James Robinson

Taken in a marsh near Hilton Head. Anyone know what it is? It looks sparrow like but if so its a large one, about the size of a small grackle. In fact I assumed it was a female grackle when I snapped the pic.

Walk in the woods - tanager

Posted By James Robinson

I took a walk in the woods by the house today after work. It borders a wetland and has an amazing variety of species this time of year. I wanted to observe with the binocs and get into spots that weren't tripod friendly so I used the 500mm f/5.6 mak hand held. Unfortunately only a few shots came out. This is a common situation, I'm still trying to figure out the optimal photo/observing equipment to take on hikes. I'd be interested in others experiences / ideas from folks who like to observe and take photos on the same trip.

This is a scarlet tanager, in a tall tree. Not a close up by I like the setting.

Eastern Bluebird

From my first set of shots with the Sigma APO II 70-300mm (D70).

This lens is quite a bargain I think. I would really like a 500mm AF but that would be 5x the cost. I will just have to get closer to the birds smile

Mallard flight shot

Posted By James Robinson

First flight shot for me with my new (and first) AF lens. I startled the ducks and they startled me so I just had time to aim, focus, and shoot. Didn't expect this inexpensive lens to focus fast enough but it (nearly) got it right. D70 + the Sigma 70-300 APO II.
