I think I caught this guy snoozing.

Nikon D100 with 80-400mm VR and SB-80DX speedlight.

This was taken at the wonderful Ash Canyon B&B (http://www.ashcanyonbandb.com), where we also got to see the very rare Plain-capped Starthroat (which I didn't get to photograph).

Painted Redstart

Last shot for tonight. This is a male painted redstart from Ramsey Canyon. I found him on a nest right outside our room at the Ramsey Canyon Inn B&B, which is right at the entrance to the preserve. He was feeding four young. This was taken near dawn with the Nikon D100, 80-400mm VR and SB-80DX speedlight.

Leapin' Lizards

OK, it didn't leap until I got a bit closer--and I was close when I took this. I had the wide-angle lens on when I saw this guy, and didn't have the other lenses handy, so I got to within about a foot to take this. The lizard--a Sonoran Collared Lizard--patiently waited until I got its portrait.

This was taken during my trip two weeks ago to southern AZ, in Tucson Mountain Park. Nikon D100, 17-35mm ED-IF AF-S II lens.

Not sure where to stick this photo, but here it is...this is from my trip to Kitt Peak two weeks ago. I will post the two photos I took there shortly, but this is my goofing around with the Mayall on the way up the mountain.

Loon

I had my camera with me this weekend at our house in northern WI and was able to get this picture of a female common loon while out canoeing. She was with her nearly mature chick and came very close to the canoe, seemingly oblivious to our presence.

Nikon D100 with 80-400VR lens.

Common Merganser

While fishing on the dock, we were joined by this immature common merganser, just losing its down. It swam right under the dock chasing sunnies. I liked this photo as you can see the bird has its eye open under water scanning for some lunch.

En Flagrante Delicto

These beetles were having a good old time on a flower, and I wanted to test out my new 200mm macro lens, so they became the subject of the photo. I really like this lens; it's very sharp and has a tack-sharp field. The only trick is depth of field. I shot this at the slowest speed I could hand-hold--1/200s to get f/13--but the depth of field is still lacking. However, I like the picture anyway.

This is reduced considerably, I will post a native-sized crop of the original.

Gettin' a buzz. This guy very effectively imitated a hornet, and had me fooled until he landed. This is another shot with the 200mm macro, reduced--as before a native resolution crop follows.
