Bad packaging Posted By Linton Rohr

Well, I'm not quite ready to issue feedback yet,
but I just received some high end bino's.
They came in a padded case, which is fortunate,
since they were bouncing around in the box,
which was about 3 times the size of the case.
No bubble wrap. No foam. No peanuts. Nothing.
The case was dented in the area of one of the latches.
The bino's appear to be in good shape. I'll try them out tonight.
But I am absolutely amazed that someone would ship like this.
I will contact the seller to see what he has to say.
He is a 2+ year Astromartster with a dozen 5 star ratings.

New Horizons' Jovian Flyby Posted By Linton Rohr

NASA has released stunning new images of Jupiter and its moons taken by the New Horizons spacecraft. Highlights include a movie of a volcanic eruption on Jupiter's moon Io; a nighttime shot of auroras and lava on Io; a color photo of the "Little Red Spot" churning in Jupiter's cloudtops; images of small moons herding dust and boulders through Jupiter's faint rings.

Red Tripod Light Posted By Linton Rohr

On a recent trip to Home Depot, I happened to see a prominent display featuring a couple hundred of these new (?) Stanley LED light stands. I thought they might make a nice addition to my red light collection. The head tilts up or down, and the tripod would allow one to place the light about anywhere. Could be useful for chart reading, note taking, equipment trouble shooting, or breaking down while others are still observing. The 3-way switch lights up your choice of 1, 3, or all 6 LED's. A small allen wrench is required, to remove the top ring, which will allow a couple layers of red filter to be put in place. AA batteries fit inside the legs, and you can load up with 3, 6, or 9 depending on how many hours you want to have available, ranging from around 30 to over 300. The cost was about $20, I think. It seems like it's going to work out quite well. Have at it!

Ahoy there.
I just had the pleasure of sharing my 14.5" window into the universe,
with several hundred visitors to Grand Canyon National Park.
I met a lot of great fellow-amateurs, too.
Though I was only able to stay the first 4 days, I entertained folks
from Europe, Asia, and all parts of the USA. Most of them, of course,
had little knowledge of telescope optics, though many commented on how
wonderful they thought my images were. And though I take pride in my mirror,
the biggest joy by far was watching the reaction of people seeing celestial objects for the first time,
whether it was Saturn, Jupiter, M13, M8, M51, the Veil, or what have you.
Audible gasps and various exclamations of awe were quite common.
Many had never even seen dark skies before, let alone the Milky Way in all it's glory.
Heartfelt expressions of gratitude flowed freely, and my heart was truly warmed.
Most of these people will take home with them a new appreciation of our universe,
and perhaps a few will be inspired to pursue astronomy in some way themselves.
I am happy to have shared my small bit of knowledge with them,
and look forward to doing so for years to come.

beginners GEM? Posted By Linton Rohr

Howdy folks.
Hoping to get a little advice on what could be my first GEM.
I started out with a LX-90 3-4 years ago, but became primarily a Dob guy after about a year, due to the aperture advantage on DSO's. I do have a refractor though - a TV-85 - to take advantage of the lovely wide field views that they offer. I have been using it on a TelePod alt-az mount, which I'm quite comfortable with. I feel like I'm missing something though, so I've been watching for GEM's in the immediate area, and have found a Vixen Super Polaris that looks like a reasonable starter mount. It's a bare-bones model, no tracking motors. I figure if I like the mount I could add those later. Any thoughts on all this?
A Losmandy GM8 w/Gemini would be great too, but I haven't seen any in the neighborhood lately.
Besides, I should find out if I'm suited to GEM's first.
Any advice, from those who have been down this road, would be greatly appreciated.
