Neximage CCD camera as autoguider?

Posted By Rod Mollise

robin woolsey said:

I have a Neximage Solar system imager and I've read somewhere it could be used as an autoguider as well. What does it take to do this? The imager has a USB connection and my CG-5 has a 6-pin phone jack connection. Is there an adapter and what software is required?
robin

Yes, you can autoguide with it...but not through the autoguide port. You will guide through your scope's serial port. See your guiding program's documentation for details.

It's main limitation is sensitivity, but it is certainly good enough to star out with.

What is a Meade DS 16 worth these days?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Jimmy Vick said:

Back in college I used a Meade DS 10 for my first telescope. It is long gone and there is a guy selling a DS 16 locally, what is a fair market price for a bare bones DS 16 in fair shape?

And... are the drives on the DS 16s better than the ones on the DS 10?

Thanks!

No, they are no better. In fact, they usually are worse, since the mount/drive was at its limit with the 16.

How much? That is always hard to say, since, as I am wont to say, "An old scope is worth exactly what you can convince someone to pay for it."

Condition figures into it...and most are not going to be in very good condition. OK condition? Everything works? Mirror in good shape? 500 - 600 tops.

How much is my Nexstar 9.25 GPS and Gear worth?

Posted By Rod Mollise

David Albertson said:

Moving to Los Angeles has killed my astronomy life over the last few years. I have a beautiful, but large scope, a Celestron Nexstar 9.25 GPS. I'm hoping that getting something smaller will help me get out more often. I've spent more than $3000 on the equipment, but haven't decided on what I should ask when I resell. Any suggestions? More photos at the link below. Thank you so much!!

Maybe as much as 1200 or so. The case is a big plus, but the rest of the gear, the eyepieces, for example, is not going to command much $$$. There's also the fact that your GPS is an "older scope" now...and that it is a buyer's market at the moment.

Baader 0III & UHC Filters

charles geiger said:

I see the Baader 2" OIII and UHC filters are about $100.00 each. Are they as good as Lumicon? Do they fit most 2" eyepieces (threads)?

Yes and yes. I like their OIII _better_ than the Lumicon.

wink

Fellow Christian: It's a dead Universe

There is a reason why the earth is the only island in this vast universe with life. Send me a PM and I will send you the information as to why. It's deep bible scripture that you won't get from Sunday School or from the pulpits of America. It's too wordy to put here but it is a short read.

Yeah, and I'll bet it's just full of EVIDENCE for this ridiculously unfounded assertion, and that _Science_ and _Nature_ will be publishing it shortly. LOL.

Dynascope RB-6

Posted By Rod Mollise

William Wright said:

Hi, I am rebuilding a dynascope RB-6. These scopes were made from about 1958 to into the 1980's. Is there any way to determine when an RB-6 was made. I found markings on to drive motor, 35674-r-6 1-80. Could the 1-80 be Jan. 1980 or is it something else? I need to replace the reduction gearing for this scope, if anyone has a motor, reduction gearing available please let me know. When did the first RB-6 hit the market and when did the last one leave the factory?

That's R_V_-6.

Yes, the motor indicates the date of manufacture. In most cases, anyhow. The RV-6 was continued after Criterion was bought by Bausch and Lomb, and, the RV-6 Dynascope was sold all the way up to Comet Halley time, around 1986.

Best bet for RV-6 parts is to enquire on the Dynascope Yahoogroup.

Meade lxd 75 sct

Posted By Rod Mollise

Robert Black said:

Does anyone know why the threads on the back of my scope appear to be 44mm instead of normal sct thread? Meade doesn't seem to know even though they built it? Thank's, Bob.

This is a normal SCT. The only reason for this would be if someone has removed the threaded colar on the rear port exposing different threads. This is all I can thing of since the normal threads are 2-inch 24 tpi.

Do Meade LXD and other mounts fit on Vixen hubs...

Posted By Rod Mollise

Steven Lynn said:

I should know this, but for various reasons I have tilted toward Vixen products, but away from Meade. Not rational reasons. Some of you are old enough to remember before the 1980's that some families were "Ford" families, and some were "Chevy" families. Inter-marriage was unthinkable! It's like that. So I don't know much about the Meade mounts.

Anyway, can the Meade LX and other mounts fit on a Vixen hub? The green and black era Vixen, for the Super and Great Polaris family of mounts. The hub with the little tip sticking up?

Thanks,
Steven

Not sure what you mean by "hub"...do you mean the dovetail/saddle?

It's also not clear what you men by LX or LXD? Which telescope are you referring to? If you mean "LXD75" or "LXD55," these scopes come with Vixen compatible dovetails and will go right onto a Vixen mount.

At any rate, Vixen style dovetails are available for many scopes, and are what you will need to mount a telescope on a Vixen mount.

old telescope identification

Posted By Rod Mollise

thomas marabillas said:

could anybody help me identify this beautiful old telescope. i rebuilt it and there are no markings on it except for the pyrex stamp on the main eight inch mirror, and the small bodine motor that drive the main arm. it is really put together well and weighs four hundred pounds. the main drive gear is brass, setting circles are aluminum. any help would be greatly appreciated. original color was drab green. tube is welded steel. finder scope has cross hatches etched into the eyepiece.

Not immediately familiar. If you don't get an answer here, run this by the boffins on the CN Classic scope board...
