Intelligence Report"Iraq Prospects Bleak"

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Well I gotta cut him slack for that. I mean, he IS the commander in chief. If he came out and said "Yeah, well it looks like we're screwed" it wouldn't do much for troop morale.

However, he should say something about additional commitment to stability. Did he? (I didn't hear the speech) But with everything that's going on, do the math, 1xx,000 troops doesn't cut the mustard here anymore.

What's the motive?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

A friend once described to me the motive, metaphorically, as 'gardening'.

I think having them do the commentary would be even more fun.

That's right, no hush money. NASA bribed Bill with a $250,000 telescope and CCD system instead, and they gave him one of the LEM mockups from the studio to keep in his backyard. Don't let the cat out of the bag, Bill! wink

Saddam's in custody...

Because the government, with it's never ending alerts and always changing color-coded threat-meter, is training you to live in a state of heightened anxiety and more or less constant fear. It's a form of conditioning. It is easier to sustain long-term support for war if you can sustain long-term heightened levels of fear in the populace.

How Left Are Our Lefties?

Don't think he's kidding, and you shouldn't be too surprised if you've seen his work -- Mike is about as left-wing as it gets, he doesn't leave much to question about that.

Religion & Children.

The local lutheran church is a good middle road to take, imho. We take our daughter to church, sunday school, etc. I think it does add some structural, ritualistic element to life too which can be useful. But it's not a huge part of our lives, and we 'skip' a lot of sundays in summer. smile

Just let them absorb it, then they're familiar with (and respectful to) this part of the culture, and will be able to understand and recognize certain icons and stories people associate with holidays, etc.

We have sometimes told bible stories at bedtime. You know, Noah's ark and all that. I don't know if she thinks they're real or fairy tales, she never asks. She doesn't ask much about religion, really, she mostly asks questions about how things work (Yes!! A scientific mind! smile )

Don't sweat too much exactly what you 'tell' them. Before you know it they'll be teenagers and think you don't know anything anyway! :C

A Glimmer Of Hope?

Are you suggesting that wishful thinking is a sound basis for finding truth?

What are we going to do?

The market will resolve the matter through the brute force of commodity pricing long before the government does anything.

As oil prices escalate there will be widespread conversions to natural gas for applications that can do so (the peak in natural gas production should lag by a decade or so the peak of global oil production which is supposed to occur within the next few years).

As this conversion drives up demand (and thus prices) for natural gas, increasing numbers will begin resorting to various biomasses for home heating -- corn, wood, pellets, cherry pits, anything that will burn. The new demand will bring about a renaissance in American Farming and also boost the wood industry by creating insatiable demand for its waste products.

Nuclear fission will be revisited for re-expansion for mass-produced power. Oil-exporting nations, watching their production tailing off and eager for replacement revenue, will offer storage bunkers in the deep desert for nuclear waste in exchange for annual global royalties.

Eventually the entire Saraha and the Arabian Peninsula will be tiled with Mega-sized solar panels and the Arabs will export pure wattage to the global grid. About this time sustained fusion will become a reality, providing cheap, clean, unlimited power and we'll all live happily ever after. smile
