Earth may be headed into a mini Ice Age

It is not even assured that the Maunder Minimum had _anything_ to do with the cold weather that coincided with it...

Religion in public schools....

William Paolini said:

So what should we do with public schools in terms of moral and ethical education? Do you think it would be an improvement overall if public schools K-12 were required to have in addition to the basics teaching in ethics and morals appropriate to the American culture as a way of putting back this loss with no religious education allowed in public schools?

It would be fine if we left religion out of it. Do you think that would happen?

What is the best tripod and wedge for an old C8?

Posted By Rod Mollise

Jeff Cravotta said:

Hello All, I just bought an old orange, 1970's fork mounted C8. I need a tripod for it. I have found a few original ones for sale. Perhaps some of you who have worked with these scopes know of a better support alignment option that I may search for? THANK YOU! Jeff

Frankly, the original "triangle" tripod from the 70s is about as good as you can get.

C90 Mak Review/Ditch the Diagonal

Posted By Rod Mollise

I have yet to see a good "correct image" diagonal from anybody.

It's nice to hear a C90 is finally carrying on the proud tradition... I know I love my little Orange Tube 90!

This is my idea of a diagonal for the 90:

Try it outside, in a clear, open area if that is not what you are doing.

Independence Day

Doug Matulis said:

Curious, since Independence Day is about celebrating freedom, liberty, self-reliance, and our capitalistic free republic, what do liberals and democrates celebrate on this day?

Hmmm...let's see how to put this delicately...

"Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

Or do you just enjoy the abuse, Einstein?

Oh, and who are these "Democrates" you so disparage?

Nevertheless, enjoy the 4th and don't drop your sparklers in the kiddie pool when you go in. ;-)

Free Will and an Omniscient god

Mutually exclusive concepts. Which do you choose?

Can I choose "none of the above"?

Oh certainly there is some free will...but much of our behavior is dictated by biology.

And certainly, alas, there are no gods.

NASA's Final Shuttle: The End of an Error?

As the shuttle program comes to an end, I thought this was an interesting article. I guess growing up during Apollo(I was 16 during Apollo 11), I just could never get extremely "excited" about the shuttle program. I do look forward to the planet exploration missions and the results from the various telescopes in orbit.

I recall feeling a bit of sadness when Apollo 17 ended. cwy In regard to the shuttle, I'm just somewhat indifferent. :S

I'm torn. I think in some ways the Shuttle (as it turned out...the original concept would have been a different thing) was a wrong turn. On the other hand, a lot WAS accomplished.

Florida Teachers Free to Practice Religion Again :)

ACLU went too far attacking religious freedom and being reigned back in thank goodness.

Faculty and teachers can once again pray at school during their break times, pray during school events in a nonofficial capacity, attend and fully participate in baccalaureate services, have a Bible on their desk, wear religious jewelry, and assign readings from the Bible to students when relevant to nonreligious academic assignments. Students will be allowed to voluntarily pray, submit religious answers in homework, and freely participate in private, after-school religious programs.

What happens when a teacher wants to keep a Koran on her desk, rolls out a prayer rug in the teachers' lounge, and assigns students a Sura "when appropriate"? I am guessing you and your buddies will immediately have several litters of kittens. LOL!
