That is truly a dream set-up. I will be waiting to see some of your CCD work out of this. I am so very happy for you and wish you many hours of happiness with your new scope and fantastic mount. Although it does not compare to what you have here is a photo of my new TMB 115 CNC on a simple Alt-Az Hercules mount(going to use it for grab and go)When I can afford it I hope to get a Losmandy G-11 with Gemini-3 so I can do some CCD work with it. Currently use a Celestron Ultima 2000 with SBIG 237A for fast star work. I am just getting into it. Thanks for a great photo of what has to be for many of us an un-obtainable but cherished dream.

Difference between CNC and LW

Take a look at this TMB CNC 115 after looking at Ron's previous photo's to see the differance which is in my opinion significant. The CNC stands for the type of manufacturing process used to make the optical tube and focuser.

Deciding on a First Scope

The best advice that you have received on this list has been basically "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY" There is just no substitute for hands on experience and the subjective factor. Knowing the in's and out's of the different scope designs is important but it still all boils down to that feeling you will get when you experience the right one. Heck this is starting to sound positively pornographic. I'm outa here.

TMB-Burgess Optical 1x Multi Reticle Finder Scope?

I called High Point Scientific the other day where I have had one on preorder for close to a month. All they could tell me was perhaps a couple more weeks. If you know Mr. Burgess there is no surprise there. If the finder is just half as good as I have heard then the wait will be well worth it.

Do you recall where you got the laser mount? I have been looking for a decently built one at a reasonable price. Got any suggestions. I have believe it or not a class B 50Mu green laser. That right not the usuall 5 or 15 Mu but 50. If looks like a light saber at night and has a range of 4 or 5 miles. Definetly not something to use with any aircraft around. Actually they are supposed to be used for research purposed only and not around the public as just a instant flash to the eye can do permanent damage. I would like to use it when alone in the country as a star pointer because of its range. Or perhaps it should just go in my tool box. What do you think?? I am fairly sensitive to the aircraft issue as I am a pilot myself.

What are typical mags used for planetary viewing?

Reading these post's reminds me of something. Although it is likely that you are all well aware of this for the benefit of some one new reading this thread it should also be remembered that the collimation and or alignment of what ever type of optics being used does come into play when using powers that exceed the 50x by one inch of aperature rule. Most folks that I know who like to do allot of high power observing i.e. Planets and Lunar usually make frequent checks to make sure that their optics are as fine tuned as they can make them. As we all know a scopes optics can be off to a significant degree and it will not be that noticeable at lower powers particularly with the less experienced observer. I realize that I am sounding like I am "preaching to the choir" but as I said this post is just to cover the bases for some less informed.

Does she know how much that AP scope and mount cost? If she does not my advice would be not to tell her. Otherwise you may come home one day and find a large sectional couch and a few other things sitting where that scope used to be.-smile
