Last Thursday, the 21st, I took my family up to our lake house in northern WI. My youngest brother lives in VA and has never seen the northern lights. We drove up at night, and there was a nice display going. He was thrilled, but the real show was down on the dock a little later. We watched the lights for about an hour before they faded. This was the only decent shot I got as I had to balance the camera on a bunched-up jacket.

This is a 30 second exposure with a Nikon D100 and Nikon 17-35mm lens wide open.

NGC 281 in H-alpha

This is my first image in nearly six months...clear steady skies, even though the moon was out. Halpha made the moon a non-issue.

Takahashi FSQ-106N, SBIG ST-10XE, CS 3nm Halpha filter, AP600 GTO mount. Total of six 20-minute exposures for a integration of two hours.

NGC 281 HaRGB

This is the color data I referred to in my earlier post. I have added 35:35:60 minutes of RGB (5-minute subexposures) to the 120 minutes of hydrogen-alpha, here used as the luminance.

Same equipment as the earlier post, of course.

This is actually the first HaRGB I have done...it came out OK but I think I still prefer the pure Ha image.

California Neblua in Ha

This was taken early Saturday morning. It is a 160-minute integration composed of eight 20-nimute subexposures (I was hoping for nine exposures to get 180 minutes, but lost the guidestar while I slept).

Takahashi FSQ-106N, SBIG ST-10XE, AP600 GTO mount and CS 3nm H-alpha filter.

Apapane from Kauai

It was very difficult to photograph any of the native birds in Hawaii, as most survive only high in the cloud forest, where its well, cloudy. This is a shot of three Apapane, one of the more common honeycreepers, in the Kokee State Park on Kauai, near the Alakai Swamp. This is some very remote wilderness. We hiked almost two miles along some difficult and treacherous trail muddy trails to get out here, but did manage to see 6 species of birds endemic to Hawaii, four of them endemic to Kauai. The best was the I'iwi, but I was unable to photograph it.

Anyway, this was taken with the Nikon D100 and the 80-400mm VR lens. Very hazy, so lighting was tough. These guys were about 50 yards away.

New H-alpha image: Deep Cone Nebula

I was testing my new mount last night, shooting some hydrogen-alpha since the moon was out, and also because I wanted to test the STV with this mount (worked great!). Anyway, this is a 6-hour exposure of the Cone Nebula region taken with my ST10-XE and Takahashi FSQ-106N using the Custom Scientific 4.5nm Hydrogen-alpha filter and FLI DF-2 focuser.

Same gear as the Cone Nebula shot I posted earlier tonight...this is only a 3-hour exposure, however. Both shots were comprised of 20-minute subs.

Deep Ha Cone Nebula

I stretched this image a bit more, and there is some much data there it can easily handle it. This is a 6-hour Hydrogen-alpha image of the Cone region taken with a Takahashi FSQ-106N, SBIG ST10-XE, and Custom Scientific Ha filter.

This image has been downsized by 50%.
