D and AA and any other type of standard single cell batteries put out between 1.2-1.5V. 4 D batteries may have a higher capacity than 6 AA's, but won't damage a mount intended to use 4 D's because they produce a lower voltage. In fact, you may find that the mount is underpowered and that it won't function completely, assuming that the batteries are in series in both mounts (a safe assumption).
I can tell you that my Starguide GoTo mount (Tasco/Celestron) will last about 8 hours on 8 AA NiMH batteries with 1800mAh capacities (that's a total of 1800mAh charge since all the batteries are in series) when used normally - tracking, slewing, etc. It's a much smaller mount and scope than yours and 1800mAh is around double the capacity of a typical alkaline battery. I seriously doubt Meade's claim of 50 hours on AA's with the Starfinder has any merit at all.

It's still just a CG-5 (EQ-4) available with or without GoTo. I don't think that anything has been done to upgrade it from a mechanical standpoint. If you've got a CG-5 then buying a newer one could not be considered an upgrade except if your old one has degraded to the point that it's unusable
Might be worth pocketing the money and getting an HEQ-5 or EQ-6 at some later date. As far as Synta goes those two mounts are as good as it gets, and they are even highly regarded as far as any mount goes (particularly in light of their price tags).
