Magnification is a function of FL - the 80mm will have less power as it's FL is less. Why not just get a few more eyepieces for the c-90 to increase power? Alot cheaper then a new scope and more efficent.

Assuming the DC dec motor is the standard one (Which is really a JMI product) then you can just get the hand box for the dec motor from JMI. They used to carry a Drive Corrector which did both (Moto Trak I think was the JMI name), but with most RA drives gone DC, the Drive Corrector has for the most part gone the way of the Dodo.... I think Lumicon might still carry one. Although I'd bet an ad on A-Mart might get you one....

Start with a 6" Dob. Some will say an eight, but the 6 will be much more user friendly (esp. for kids)- smaller, lighter, and a bit cheaper (ie - you can get another eyepiece....).

I think it really depends on what you want to do - if visual only with just the basic accessories you would probably be fine with the gm-8, gp-dx, or even the eq6/Atlas. If you start using heavier accessories, or want to do photography, I'd move up to the ci-700/G-11/CGE type mounts - well worth the extra $. The cg-5 is way to light IMO.

M-13 is a globular cluster - not a nebula. It is made up of older stars, which means very little dust/gas.

What you see visually (And it looks more like an "X" to me) goes away with very large telescopes and Photography. Your mind likes to see patterns - and that's all this is.

Propellor "asterism" in M13

Kim - I posted very similar to what Ivan said. But I think there may be some confusion. It "IS" something within M-13 - it is an "asterism". That is to say a grouping of random objects (Stars) that form a pattern to the brain. These are usually formed by "line of site" - IE - a bunch of stars that are of similar brightness to the eye against a lighter (in this case) group of stars so they stand out. Usually they are not really the same distance or location, but are a line of site issue - they are random in nature.

Gary Russell made them a few years back. Every once in a while they come up for sale. There was one on that other site a few months back.

Gary has made lots of custom things for me over the years - wouldn't be surprised if he would make one up if you asked.

My own 2 cents is these mounts - along with the cg-5 and clones will hold them but it really depends on what you intend to do. For lower power viewing and very short photo stuff they will "work" - for critical higher power viewing, or long exposure work I'd move up....
