Dobson new vs. used

A used dob can be a real cost saver but you have to be careful. How has the scope been used? I find some use their scopes very hard and actually abuse them by not being careful. They are nicked, scratched, dented, etc and then the owners advertise them as "lightly used." Others handle their scopes with care, as you should any fine instrument.

I suggest asking lots of questions and getting lots of pictures. Check everything very carefully. If possible, take the time and drive out to see it.

Seeing the Encke Gap

It's very tough to see the Encke Gap. I've never seen it but heard/read reports of seeing it under near perfect conditions, like southern Florida and parts of Texas. Hope some of our other experienced observers share their thoughts.

I doubt if I'm the first but I did see the moon at about 2050 local (0250 UT). We had clear skies from horizon to horizon north of Denver.

Hi Paul,

I recommend going to the darkest observing site possible, using the lowest power eyepiece with an OIII filter, and patience. Both of these should be visible in your scope.
