Looking lovely together this evening!
I was watching Venus for quite a while before sunset,
trying to see how early I could detect Saturn in the field.
Tomorrow they'll be even closer, about 40 arc-minutes apart.
Get out there and take a look. grin

John Powers' Discovery replacement tube

Warren's mention of Discovery in the Eq forum, brought to mind the problem John was having with them back in April.
I'm curious as to whether the new tube ever arrived and how well it worked out,
once the curved spider, focuser, etc. were properly mounted.

First light...of sorts

I recently had the pleasure of setting my scope up for my first night of observing on my very own dark sky site. 11 acres in the red rock country of southern Utah! grin It's just west of Capitol Reef National Park. We had signed the realtor's papers earlier that day, and just recently closed escrow. Aside from being a gorgeous setting, the sky there is significantly darker than the darkest sites that I now drive 1-2 hours to get to. And that's despite being right on the edge of town!
It was pretty cool to see the big, bright Milky Way rising from what will eventually be our home site.

CalStar '07

I'm hoping to find some folks interested in heading up to CalStar this year.

Venus and the morning sky

Well, I'm not too fond of getting up early and heading for work at dawn, but I must say I've been enjoying the pre-dawn sky here lately! Venus sure climbed into the morning sky quickly, and is blazing ever so brightly, even in the midst of all those bright winter stars. Saturn is creeping up now too, though even dimmer than I recall from last spring. Just this week, I have noted a definite change in the darkness of the sky, as the sun rises slightly later every day.
The silver lining of the cloud that is my morning commute! grin
