A Piece of the Jellyfish

Dan,
That's a wonderfully detailed image, great job bringing out the fainter strands. I was debating this weekend's target possibilities (now that I've got Ha fever) and your image might have steered me that way!
Thanks for the inspiration,
Larry Durst

Another Southern Gem Caldwell 091

Greg,
Those are some wonderful widefield shots with your D70. They really give the sky the perspective it deserves. Question: how are you attaching your camera. (My wife just got one and, well, she doesn't use it at night that often so I thought...)
Thanks,
Larry

one more newby question

Posted By Larry Durst

Stephen,
Stu had good advice. I also suggest going one step at a time--perhaps start with a webcam (or new Meade or Celestron planet cams) for an inexpensive start. Also no guiding needed, plus good fast results. Begin to learn some basic routines, processing, etc. (Actually, I now use a Starlight Express MX716 and still don't guide, but shoot 30 or 45 second images on my LX90). As for DSO's, there are so many choices these days: DSLRs, Starlight Xpress, SBIG, Attik, SAC, Meade...each of these brands has their own website on Yahoo Groups. Why not hang out on those groups and ask questions there? It's not as good as hanging out with some imagers in person at a club site, but you'll get a sense of the kinds of routines and issues that imagers of various kinds face.
Hope this helps a bit,
Larry

John,
Another nice image of the Crab. Just wondering: was your previous luminance the same scale? Have you tried using that data along with the color (that prior B/W had truly wonderful detail.)
Keep looking up,
Larry

Jim,
Very nice shot, with great color. You've inspired me to add it to my Ha list while Gemini is still high in the sky.

Tom,
That's really phenomenal. I actually feel like there's a story in that picture--the fine detail and composition make it seem, dare I say it, animated.
Keep 'em coming!

Cal,
Both shots are great. The color processing is very well blended. Keep 'em coming.

Out of focus and what else?

Luca,
Wow, that's far better than my second image. (And probably my 20th!) Actually, M42, while bright, is a tough target to process. It really throws everything the sky's got at you in one incredible object: lots of nebulosity, all kinds of colors, very bright stars, you name it. I haven't really worked with Photoshop curves, but you might want to play with bringing down the very hot Trapezium area (I finally was able to do just that using Histrogram Shaping in AIP4Win--a program well worth it for the excellent reference book that comes with it--so I really relied on the software more than skill to help!) But, again, great second shot. And, as I saw with myself (still consider myself a beginner after a year) you'll see your technique improve with experience very quickly. Thanks for posting,
Larry

Brian,
Beautiful shot, and processing. You really managed to bring out the small formations well, always my favorite part of this object. Thanks for posting it.
Larry
PS: Nice to see another MX716 user in New Jersey!
