First Venus this year

Richard,

Excellent picture. I did not know that cloud features on Venus could be imaged by amateurs. But you certainly have some here. I'll have to check inot one of these UV filters. Thanks for posting.

Jesus' crypt show

I wanted to see it but missed it. Do you know if they planned to air it again anytme soon? Also, I heard there was some type of statistical analysis used to support some of the conclusions. Were any facts given about that?

Ap Fever question: 14.5" to 18"?

Posted By John Miele

Hi Sanders,

Keep the 14.5" and buy a Mallincam integrating video camera. Seriously. It will blow away any view of a faint fuzzy you could hope to achieve in an 18". And you will save money too.

Wow Paul! You are really getting some nice detail for a 6+ arc-sec disk. I think you will have soem inredible images at opposition. I may even get up one morning and take a crack at it myself!

Thanks for posting.

Rich field scopes - nobody consider Newtonians?

Posted By John Miele

You might consider one of the old Celestron Comet Catchers. They are 5.5” f3.6 Schmidt-newts. I bought one used for $250 last year and it gives excellent widefield views. It is picky about eyepieces. You really need to use a good quality EP. I tried a 17mm stratus and it could not handle the steep light cone, but for what ever reason, my Denkmeier 21mm EP seems to be tuned just right for this scope. It gives bright views and the stars are surprisingly tight and well focused over most of the field. The exit pupil is 5.8mm and the field is 2.7 deg. @ 24X. I would go no lower than 21mm or the secondary shadow might begin to intrude. This combination does a great job sweeping around the Milky Way at a dark site and since I already owned the Denkmeier EP, it was pretty affordable.

Thanks Guys. It's has taken me a few years to aquire all the hardware. Those are the Denkmeier II binoviewers and I really enjoy them on planets and bright deepsky objects.

Jupiter with a SV-102ED

Ooops! Someone pointed out that could not be Callisto and must be Io. I checked starry night and they were correct. The moon is Io not callisto.
