I'm curious why and how people can cling to archaic beliefs in the face of clear evidence that it isn't true. I'm not here to argue science vs religion (science always wins), but am trying to understand the mindset that leads one to believe pure nonsense, proven beyond a doubt to be untrue (e.g., geocentrism, creationism).

Dogbane Beetle

Dogbane beetles not only have amazingly bright spectral colors, they are very reflective. You can see the dark tree line, my arms and hands and the camera lens plus the leaf edge reflected in the elytra (wing covers).
Just look for Dogbane plants and you'll find these beetles. Withrow Nature Preserve, Cincinnati

Don't get out of the boat

These are young Saltwater crocodiles. Historically, these crocs can reach high population densities, but hunting, habitat loss, and competition for fish has reduced them considerably. This photo was taken at a croc farm in Thailand at feeding time. These are youngsters. Adults can reach dinosaur-like proportions, over 20 ft and upwards of a half ton. Salties are only exceeded in weight by the largest marine turtles (Leatherbacks), and in length by the largest boiid snakes (pythons, anacondas). There are stories of 30 ft monsters back in the day, and these would have been the largest living reptiles.
Salties are notorious man eaters!

These butterflies have an overall dark appearance with spots. Here you're seeing light coming through the wing. Taken in southern Kentucky.

Crooked Creek

This is Crooked Creek where it crosses the Great Saltpeter Cave Preserve, in Rockcastle Co., KY. The creek is very cold because of all the caves and springs that feed it. The air was near 100% humidity and in the upper 80's, hence the fog near the water. I dove in because I was so hot and sweaty, but couldn't breathe while in the water! GASP It did the trick, however.

Fritillary on Ironweed

Photographed in southern Kentucky. This seems to be a good year for Ironweed. There are spectacular displays in old pastures (cattle won't eat it, so it's often the only plant left in some fields) all over right now. The butterflies like it, and look great on it.

Great Saltpeter Cave

A scene from Great Saltpeter Cave Preserve. This cave was mined for saltpeter (potassium nitrate), a component of gunpowder, from 1805 through the Civil War. Many wooden mining artifacts are preserved in the cave, including wooden plumbing! Hollowed logs transported water that was used to leach the mineral from the cave dirt.
Nikon D-80, 18-135 Nikkor at 18mm. 8 second exposure using the commercial lighting system.

Eaten Ironweed

I liked the ghosts of the ironweed leaves embedded in the web of these tent caterpillars. All they left was the skeleton, and all the little specks you see... caterpillar poop!

August Nights

I was out in a dark-sky environment in southern Ky last night and tried some time exposures. I liked this one the best, as it looks just like many night time walks I've taken, with the road barely visible, and the Milky Way the brightest thing visible.
I just hope there aren't any copperheads out on the road.

This is Owlsley Fork Lake, near Berea, KY. There is a Great Blue Heron standing on the tip of the point of land, but alas, he's nearly invisible.
