Lear & Lazar Go RVing with Celestron

Posted By Rod Mollise

Rod Kaufman said:

If you watched the History channel Saturday, you might have caught the segment in which former CIA pilot John Lear(of the Lear jet family)claimed he went RVing with Bob Lazar, set up his Celestron telescope, and observed flying discs over area 51.
You can read about here:
http://www.thewhyfiles.net/boblazar.htm
I do I believe it? No, but since the forums in the AM appear gutted and other MIA or KIA, I thought I'd add a little spice for anyone interested in a good chuckle.
Trivia fact: Al Gore's roommate at Harvard was Space Cowboy's star, Tommy Lee Jones.

IMHO, Herb's house-cleaning was warranted and long overdue. There are plenty of places to fight the political wars, and those groups may have been one of the things holding the AM forums back.

On the subject at hand, I was watching HC the other night, and Glen Campbell (not the Rhinestone Cowboy, the other Glen Campbell, he of the infamous _Groom Lake Desert Rat_, lol) led a crew up Tikaboo (I guess), and an Orange Tube was much in evidence.

GP or GPD2

I have a Stellarview 102 Ed and eventually plan to ad a digital camera later, will the GP handle this set up or do I need to spend the extra money and get the GPD2?

Nick

I'd think "Losmandy" for not much more--if any more--money. wink

Herschel Wedge for Luna

Posted By Rod Mollise

Steve Stonehill said:

Hi All,

During the last full moon I tried my wedge on the moon for the first time. I was using a 120mm refractor and binoviewers and all I can say is WOW!!! If you have a wedge and have yet to try it on the moon you're in for a treat. The brightness is not the least bit uncomfortable and the contrast is fantastic. Although I haven't tried it I think that a Herschel wedge would be useable in an SCT or a Mak for moon viewing.

Clear Skies and Happy Holidays!

If the Moon seems a little on the bright side, I just PUMP UP THE POWER and drink in more detail. Of course that doesn't always work for those who live in seeing-challenged areas. wink

For the novices out there: the Moon, no matter how bright she seems, will NOT damge your eyesight.

Need help with new Sirius Mount...I'm an idiot, so

Marc Whitsett said:

Just got a Sirius EQ-G Mount with a hand controller. All I want to do is slew and then solar track. I did a daytime alignment but the sun isn't listed as an object. I don't know how to proceed. I am an Alt-Az kind of a guy. If anyone is willing to communicate with me to help me, much obliged. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post.

Marc Whitsett

Well, it's not that hard to find the Sun. wink If you simply must go-to it, you could look up its current coordinates and enter it as a User Object. If you did some kind of alignment, the mount is tracking in RA already and that is not a problem. You can select Solar rate under "Select Tracking" in the setup menu of the SynScan.

Aries SAFIX

Hi, Has anybody have any experience with Aries SAFIX? I've been reading how they really help the C6R {of which I own}.
De Lorme

Unless the scope in question suffers from _spherical aberraton_, it won't help. You want the (no longer produced as far as I know) Chromacorr.

I will say the SAFIX is one amazing device if'n you need it.

Resolution

Rob Howell said:

What should I be looking for in resolution specs for scopes, what are good numbers?

Do you really mean "resolution" or "wave front error"? Resolution is a function of aperture, and is the same for scopes of the same aperture and design.

Celestron Control

Posted By Rod Mollise

Rob Howell said:

What model clock drive hand control remote does a ~yr 2000 C8+ take.

First question would be your scope. Celestron was not making a (Super) C8 Plus in 2000. There was a Celestar Deluxe.

If that is what you mean, any of the HCs of that era should work (except of course the Ultima 2000 controller and the go-to NexStar HC). Unfortunately, none of these are available from Celestron anymore. Hit the good, old Astromart Classifieds... wink

CGEM max weight capacity

Depends on focal ratio. At f/4 - f/5, it is doable...but won't be the Rock of Gibraltar.
