We will, Jason. Take care and check back when the winds die down and the dust settles.

How did you start?

The thread by the beginner about buying his first scope brought a question to my mind. How did you get interested in astronomy?
For me, it was just an offshoot of a more general interest in space, triggered by 2 things:

1) Being a little kid and just old enough in the early 1970's to watch the last few Apollo flights on TV

2) Watching "Star Trek" with my dad around the same time 8)

mission from God - Blues Brothers have an ally

So far the White House is denying the comments, so I wouldn't take it as a necessarily accurate account. As tempting as it is to believe the story, it sounds just a little too kooky, even for him.

Supernatural

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Objectively, ID doesn't technically require the 'supernatural' or even gods. It merely asserts that the universe we find ourselves in is artificial, rather than naturally-occurring. i.e. it could be the product of some highly advanced scientific experiment being carried out by hyperintelligent scientists in a parallel universe.

That said, it is an exercise in pure speculation. Until we have observations of a sampling of universes, including both naturally-occurring and intelligently-designed/artificial types, to compare the two, there is nothing useful to be 'taught' on the subject because there is simply no data. Thus as a 'science' topic it has about as much usefulness as a class on UFOs.

Oil crash?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

well the energy index has fallen pretty far pretty fast and is now well oversold on a short-term basis where it was overbought just a short time ago.

The energy-sector SPDR XLE is now near the bottom of its 3-year uptrend channel. Here we see if the recent pullback was just a correction or the start of a major downward trend. Today it tested support (previous resistance) at about 45. If one is betting on a renewed rally in oil and energy, this may mark a good entry point. Conversely if this is the start of a major bear move for oil then this fact should reveal itself very quickly.

How does one determine what the 'right' choice is? Should a person just go with the flow as the Taoists do, living for the moment or, does careful planning guarantee success?
Careful planning does not guarantee success. But a lack of careful planning very nearly guarantees failure.

No way. You would need republicans to impeach him. If he were a democrat and done all the same things he'd have been impeached long ago, but being a republican he's still immune, imho

Liberal Christian Churches

Posted By Paul Kammueller

For the record, I was raised in the United Church of Christ. It is more of what I consider a church for 'regular people'. Meaning, people who will acknowledge reality and scientific concepts such as evolution but still like to go to church and have pot luck dinners and so forth.

Not big into preaching or proselytizing to others. A bit more emphasis on Jesus' teachings, less emphasis on Paul's, general emphasis on tolerance, and it shows its Quakerist roots in this regard. Christ's deification noticeably more subdued than in, say, the Lutheran Church. Doctrine I remember was largely behavioral, a kind of 'practical' christianity which left most of the 'weird stuff' (mythic imagery and particulars of salvation/afterlife) to your interpretion.
