God Created the Heaven and the Earth

Please listen to the attached NASA URL Christmas Eve Broadcast from Apollo 8. Even NASA believes that God created the Heaven and the Earth.
NASA doesn't believe anything, it's a vehicle operating organization, not a living person with feelings or beliefs.

The link is to quotes by the individual astronauts quoting the Bible, not NASA the organization, who are, of course, humans with feelings and beliefs and religions just like lots of people. This should hardly be surprising.

That's probably the state we are in right now. The guy who made this whole mess doesn't really care about any one of us individually, an any compassionate feelings about the whole is only for achieving a purpose.
The 'whole' is really all that matters anyway, whether there is a 'purpose' or not, imho. The 'any one of us individually' is really nothing more than a localized frame of reference. The product of a mental spacial coordinate system, a useful fiction of discrete individual existences that helps the whole to process lots of information across aeons of time.

When I go through all the trouble of proofing my yeast, mixing my dough, waiting 3 hours for it to rise, I never, at this point, say, 'Oh, I'm bored with this, I think I'll just throw this away and do something else.' I want to enjoy the finished product!
This analogy has just taken a turn for the worse. If this means God intends to eat us, I want out of the dough right now 8O

Welcome back! 8)

Wow, Eric, Mike, you -- we've had quite a run of returns from long absences here. There's a few new faces, aside from that it's been more or less the same ol' stuff. smile

Question: With elevinty billion different flavors how can I know which is the right one?
Knowing which is right, when all may be wrong, is not a reasonable goal. There is too little information, and too much misinformation from too many sources. What is reasonable is that one may endeavor to not be wrong, or at least as little wrong as possible.

The safest route, then, is some sort of vaguely deistic agnosticism. The subtle acknowledgement of the possibility of some higher power(s) allows one to trod a reasonable middle ground, being a socially-acceptable 'believer' of sorts, while not running the risk of worshipping false god(s) and thus angering the real one(s).

Big Picture -- Reversion to the Mean

The S&P Midcap 400 shows a similar pattern on the 10-year chart, here resuming it's mean slope as well, demonstrating reasonably well that the phenomenon is not limited to the Nasdaq..

Much of our foreign policy in the Middle East hinges upon the thought that spreading democracy will lead to more peace and less violence.
Welcome to the 21st Century. Advocates of peace, restraint or moderation are generally considered to be 'weak'. This is true there as much as it is here. Militancy and religious conviction are generally regarded as signs of strength and decisiveness.

What sort of creator would require sacrifices of living things, at least per the Old Testament, for his/her/it's benefit and glory?

Do you really feel that there is intelligent loving design when these two things are considered?

Actually, humans could exist just fine without killing other critters...so, what's your excuse now? Free will? Pro choice?
The obvious retort would be that it's the Creator's fault for making meat so tasty wink
