Worth reading

Posted By James Brown

Hi Steve:

I think this quote describes a lot of us. I guess then the decision of whether to vote R or D becomes a subtle weighting analysis. Do we value personal liberty more or less than social action? How much social action do we want when the cost is bigger government? etc. Obviously there is tension built into this value system, a system that I bet virtually all moderates and most citizens share.

It is a shame that the politicians (R and D) often seem to pay lip service to these values that are so generally held in the USA.

"In reality, my own thinking on political and social issues is more subtle. I am in many ways an individual libertarian (I think people should have far more personal freedom than they do in this country), a social liberal (I think one of the many roles of government is to help those who cannot help themselves, and to do what individuals and corporations cannot do or cannot be trusted to do), and a governmental conservative (in the actual sense of the old party; I want a government that is big enough to do what it needs to do and no bigger)."

newbie regrets

last month i paid $12 to join astromart's forum,
but deeply regret it:
most forum updates are on the subject of religion !

to those that answered my brief question in the beginner's section,
i am deeply thankful,
but it is obvious that,
aside from being free,
cloudy nights' quality and quantity of discussions
is light years ahead.

ps.
i dont mean to be disrespectful,
but i always thought that observing the heavens,
would sooner or later trigger some curiosity about physics or geology (perhaps biology?),
even to those with no former background in either,
but to my surprise,
one finds biblical "astronomers" in here.
oh well,
then again,
newton loved his bible...

The quality of the technical discussion here, in the technical forums, absolutely blows away CN.

At least for advanced amateurs. Quantity? Well, CN has us there...

Liberal Conspiracies

I'm not quite sure what to say about this one, but if all liberals are pompous racists then all conservatives are remarkably stupid.

Any takers?

Thanks Jeff, that page launched a script that crashed my computer! >sad

Before I crashed, I had read enough to see that apparently some conservative moron thinks E=MC2 is wrong because it doesn't square with the Bible. I didn't get far enough to see if his name was Matulis, but who knows? Any conservative who gets his/her science from the Bible is numb in the skull. I think this is the proper forum to say that kind of thing by the way.

Regarding pomposity, I consider myself to be rather pompous on these forums. I'm sure many will agree! (In real life however, I am sweet and accommodating, the nicest guy you might ever want to meet) grin

In any case, from the "It takes one to know one" department I would agree, liberals tend to be pompous. This is not so prevalent right now since liberal policies are failing spectacularly. But boy, back in the day, i.e. when liberals accused anyone who voted for Bush of being an idiot, a dupe or worse...

Back in those days you couldn't cut through the liberal pomposity with a chain saw. Nothing like a little failure to soften them up.
