Craving a Celestron CPC 1100!

Posted By James Brown

William Daley said:

Hi all,

I knew it would happen when I re-subscribed to Astronomy Magazine. I was a charter subscriber to the mag in about 1973 and let my subscription lapse after 20 years.

Now I am wanting to get back into the hobby, and narrowed my search to the CPC 1100. I really am only interested in visual use, no astrophotography for me.

I hope this part of the discussion doesn't violate forum rules (I looked!), but I notice on every website I see, the price of the scope is exactly the same. There are no scope stores where I live, so I plan to buy it online. My question is, can anyone suggest a dealer that is willing to negotiate on the web price? Sent an email to one dealer and got a ho-hum response.

Anyway, thanks and would appreciate any thoughts any of you may have. Never been on this forum before, but I see I have a message inbox so feel free to use that venue.

William

Hi William:

I have no idea if any vendors negotiate on Celestron prices. I doubt it though.

Have you considered used? I searched "CPC 1100" on Astromart (this fine website you just joined) and see that 3 or 4 of these have gone on sale over the last few days. I and many thousands of others have safely bought like-new equipment at deep discounts on Astromart.

Here is one for sale at about $925.00 less than retail:

I don't know the seller, and I don't know you! But it seems you could drive back and forth from Missouri to Colorado in a day and do the deal in cash with no risk to either of you and no risk of shipping damage.

This final image is the Ha channel of the Sadr image. There is no processing except stretching in PS CS2. I like the full res version of this one quite a bit, there is a ton of structure and detail:

All comments and suggestions are appreciated!

image too big error for upload of ad pic

tried to upload pic for an ad. came back with error that it was too big. how do you make it smaller? not too bright on this stuff so explain carefully. did the same thing on "cloudy nights" site and it was ok. thanks for any help!!

Hi Mike:

You'll need software that can be used to edit electronic pictures. There are several good freebies available, like "Irfan View".

First, you want to change the pixel size of the image from whatever it is right out of your camera down to something reasonable, say 1000 x 600 pixels. Most all cameras take much bigger images than that. Then you adjust the jpeg compression to save as a file of about 400 kilobytes or less.

You'll probably have to mess around with the software a little to figure it out. I use Photoshop, but freebies like Irfan View will do this easily.

p.s. I'm not sure it's OK to run an ad here and at CN at the same time.

Right Crook or Wrong Bore?

If you had a choice and could vote for a charismatic crook who had pro-business, GOP, orthodox policies --OR-- a really boring, but honest, accountant lady who has no charisma, who would you choose? I think the crook could bring much needed economic development to the state, but he led one of the largest corporate medicare frauds in U.S. history. On the other hand, I don't agree with any of the Democrats policies, but she is not generally regarded as a crook. This is the WORST choice I've ever had as a voter EVER anywhere! When I was in Georgia I voted Libertarian one time because the GOP governor had a little bitty minor land scandal.

Yes, this is Rick Scott vs. Alex Sink for governor in Florida...

Hi Lee:

We have almost the same deal in Colorado. Our choices for governor are the:

(1) D - honest, very liberal, brew-pub founder who most people like, but who based upon his experience as Mayor of Denver is likely to spend spend spend like a Californian. He's polling at about 44%

(2) R - small time campaign finance crook, abandoned by the state and national party, has no funds and no chance of winning, refuses to drop out. Talks about fiscal responsibility but has no experience. Poling at less than 14%

(3) Constitution Party - Well known former R senator - honest (he honored his own self-imposed term limit pledge) but kind of a 1 issue guy, running because (2) is so bad. Polling in the 30s I think. Pretty far right - social issues guy.

If you are looking for a reasonably moderate R to vote for it is pretty grim.

The article not only describes Obama perfectly, but liberals in general. This same attitude was prevalent in this very forum...back in the days when liberals weren't too embarrassed to post here that is.
Mike

Heck, according to Rich it describes me. But compared to Rich I am a liberal I suppose. I never thought he'd give me the old "silent" treatment though. I thought he had a bit more fight in him.

Good opinion piece by the way.

Libs plans coming to reality

Doug Matulis said:

What started with Clinton giving national secrets to China and followed on by Obama apologising to the world for American success and leadership as well as out right stating that America should not be a superpower, is now becoming reality. We are losing out place in the world and falling into third world status in all areas of our country, education, economics, politics (i.e. banana republic courts and unprotected elections), moral. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/11/01/losing-scitech-race-china-experts-fear/

Doug, did you even read the article? There is nothing there about morals or banana republic courts. There is a lot about science and engineering, and the long term effect of science education on economic viability.

I see very grim and dark irony in the fact that you of all people posted this link.

Have you voted yet?

Well, voting day has arrived and it is time to go and express your views in a way that actually counts. wink
It will be an interesting election and will probably indicate the way the next election is heading.
Whether your party wins or not, it is important that whoever wins does something to bring changes that will get the country on the move again.
So VOTE, which ever way you choose, but VOTE! grin

I voted about 10 days ago, by mail. I guess it's a little less dramatic, but a heck of a lot more convenient!

Law curbs McDonald's Happy Meal toys
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20101103/us_nm/us_mcdonalds_toys

How could anyone live in such a place? Regardless of what you think about nutrition, and Happy Meals specifically, do you really want the government dictating what you should eat or how to raise your children? Do you want your government creating laws that say you can't give a toy away with a meal? Is that how they should be spending their time? Is this how the people of SF want to live? Every step of their lives dictated to them? Are they brain-dead to the point they need a helicopter government hovering over them everyday, making sure they are making the "right" decisions? Are they uber-lazy people and just don't want to have to make choices and feel the govenment should be doing that for them?

I'm from California but I just don't get how we can have such a place so alien from the rest of the country. What happened in SF? What happened to bring all these sorts of people to this one place in our country?

I know I asked a bunch of rhetorical questions but it truly does boggle my mind what goes on in California, and more specifically SF. Probably the most beautiful state with the most to offer in the country, yet the most unusual people habitate it. Of course I understand not all the people there are like that but most are, thus you have the trends in California you do. If these sorts of people were in a minority there you would see California self-destruct before our very eyes.
Mike

Damn, I see that you beat me to the punch by a matter of seconds. I'm going to leave my link up though, because the LA Times articel has the hillarious "food justice" and "no toys for you" quotes.
