Re: Air pollution

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I think as a practical matter it is far more effective for environmentalism to come from within the country. Imagine there were no environmentalists in America for a moment, and a couple dozen French guys came here and complained about our carbon emissions, what effect do you think it would have? Half the country would start driving twice as much just to annoy them.

And things are starting to happen in China. The pollution there is getting severe enough and causing enough misery that they will be forced to take measures. And Greenpeace has a China chapter in Hong Kong now too: http://www.greenpeace.org/china/en/about

Democrats not fighting about fighting

While I'd like to see a U.S. victory in Iraq, I thought the Democrats felt they had a mandate for withdrawal. What's up with that?
The numbers in Congress being what they are, fulfillment of the 'Mandate' is mathematically impossible. America is firmly in the Iraq cage, and republicans are guarding all the doors and holding all the keys.

Besides, things going forward are largely event-driven. Troop drawdowns WILL begin inside of a year, by logistical necessity, barring the reinstatement of the draft with MASSIVE increases in war spending over and above the stratospheric heights we've already reached.

All this obsessing over Hillary, day in, and day out, really makes me wonder about the Republicans. I think some of the Republicans just might have a secret crush on Hillary. shocked
Republicans want desperately bad for Hillary to be the dem nominee because they know she's an easy target. You will almost never hear republicans talk about any nominee other than Hillary because they want to make sure she gets all the press and she gets nominated.

I hate it when politicians wait til the last minut

Posted By Paul Kammueller

If you don't wait until the last minute, you'll be called 'alarmist'. Also if you announce the crisis early and then the crisis quickly abates, then you'll look like a fool.

I suppose there is no political reward for delivering bad news, early or late. So naturally the political incentive is to put off the bad news hoping that the problem will resolve itself in the meantime.

If I recall correctly Bush went out of his way to honor nixon and IMO what nixon did is MUCH WORSE than staining a dress and ruining a good cigar. :S
And what the current administration has done is far worse than either.

Al Gore

I think possible but unlikely. The earlier-mentioned 25% sounds about right. But I think he enjoys being the preacher in the wilderness more. And freed from political considerations it's easier for him to focus on what matters to him.

Al Gore

I think Gore will run again. Fate will play a part. If Mrs. Clinton provides no openings, not this cycle. If Mrs. Clinton, or Obama, loses to the Elephant, then four years from now Gore will be either very formidable, or discredited.
Interesting line of thought. But personally I don't think it's to Mrs. Clinton to provide the opening -- if he ran I think she (& every other dem candidate) would probably be done. If he thinks he couldn't beat Hillary then he's got bats in his belfry.

I think he just doesn't want to.

By the Constitution, I think the President has the authority to pardon anybody he wants... even child rapists. sad
