The scope I am working on

Posted By Yu Gu

Hello,

I am currently working on a 16" F6.9 Newtonian for planetary observation. I just created a webpage for the project:

Your suggestions and comments are appreciated.

Jupiter with 114mm Newtonian

Posted By Yu Gu

Hello,

Just took this image last night. It was taken with a 114mm F9 Newtonian I bought of AM a few days ago for $45. I saw a lot of people using firewire cameras or LU075 etc. What would be the advantage of those camera compared to a B&W Modified ToUcam? And how much the improvement will be? Can anybody help me on that? I am trying to get back to plentary imaging after two years of idleing...

Thanks and Clear Skies,
GY

Star Testing Masters, help me understand this...

Posted By Yu Gu

Hello, I took some inside and outside focus shot yesterday with ToUcam. Each images were an stack of about 200 frames. No additional processing was applied except brightness adjustment. Can you help me evaluate the optics?

Thanks,
GY

Please help me star test this scope

Posted By Yu Gu

Hello Group,

I did a star test for my refractor yesterday with a ToUcam. The ones on the top are with a green filter and the ones below are without any filter. Each image is a average of approx. 150 frames. No additional processing was applied to the image. Now, I really need your experts' comments on the optical quality of this scope 8)

Just how much magnification is equal to 1X?

Posted By Yu Gu

When I was a kid, I liked to play with numbers. I knew Jupiter could sometimes be larger than 45”, so I was thinking, if someday I have a 100X telescope, Jupiter would look like 45”x100=75’. Holy Cow, that’s two and half times the diameter of the moon, and 6.25 times the area! That must be huge with lots of details. But I was disappointed, when I finally had a scope; the Jupiter looks like a pea, a small pea.

This happened to several of my (non-astro) friends as well. When I showed them the moon at 30X, they didn’t believe the moon was magnified. They thought it’s just clearer in the telescope, but not larger.

So, anybody had similar experience?

Field Flattener Recommendation for a TMB 115 F7?

Posted By Yu Gu

Hello! I am trying to configure my TMB 115 LW for Imaging. I was wonder if anyone can suggest a field flattener that works well with this scope? Since it's a LW version so only 2" accessory can be used.

I've been seeing some flattener claims to work with F6-F8 scopes. But my understanding is that the field curvature for a triplet refractor is roughly 1/3 of it's focal length. So how can a reducer be designed for a specific focal ratio not focal length? can somebody explain this for me?

Thanks!
Gu

New Lunar Shots

Posted By Yu Gu

The seeing was just normal (3-4/10) I have to stack many pictures to get a good one. The C9.25 is really a great scope.
