Siebert Contest Guess

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

I would like to add some detail to my explaination...

The upper segment would give you 1.5x or 3.0x depending which direction the segement was attached to the binoview. The lower segment would give you 2.0x or 4.0x, also dependent on which direction the segment was attached. For example, to achieve 7x power the first segment would be set to 3.0x, the spacer would be used, and the thrid segment would be set to 4.0x. By increasing the space between elements you in effect increase the magnification factor. To achieve 3.5x the spacer would be removed from the middle.

Help Shipping Issues with Anacortes

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

A couple things :

1.) I would call them and explain the issue.

2.) Be careful when posting to a forum or website that is moderated by the company with which you are having issues

Who makes the Starfinder mirrors?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Thanks for the replies. I am doing exactly what you mentioned. I am building a truss structure around the optics, using a Moonlite CR1 focuser and a combination UO cell (top part) with homemade aluminum tailgate. Before I gutted the scope, I had the opportunity to view a little with great results.

"JB Weld" for mirror cell?

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

I am doing this exact same thing.

I used the upper portion of my UO aluminum 12.5" cell and made a lower ladder out of 1" aluminum stock. I used L-brackets to connect all of the pieces with machine screws and Loc-tite. I am going to use JB Weld to fill in all of the joints. This should make it more rigid than it is now. I will then wire brush the whole ladder and prime and paint with Krylon Ultra Flat Black. Not bad so far. I'll try to post pictures.

About to make my first scope with John Dobson

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

Lucky you. I would love to just meet him.

Have you ever done a mirror? If not, you may want to reconsider a smaller size for your first project. I've never done a mirror myself, but I am just relaying the comments others have posted.

If you stay with the 12", it could be a lot of work. If I am right, the longer the f/l the easier it should be, but the longer the scope will be. My Meade 12.5" has a f/l of 4.8, and the sonotube is over 56".

Good luck and please share your experience.

I was called very RUDE today

Posted By Timothy Hornbeck

This happened to me a couple months ago, but I was the buyer. I actually received an e-mail from the seller based on my Wanted Ad. We exchanged some e-mails, I said I was interested and I was planned to close the deal after work from home. Once at home, I e-mailed the seller and a reply was sent that the item was sold. I was pretty upset, but I let it go and a couple weeks later I found and bought an item that is better than I planned to buy for just a little bit more money.

Clear skies,

Tim
