They are. Markus has quite a good reputation and from what I've seen he's very concerned about customer satisfaction. Maybe he's at some sort of function. Maybe Markus will show up and address your concerns.

P.S. Is the eyepiece the 30mm BW Optik?

If the Atlas/EQ-6 is too heavy, why not consider it's smaller brother - the HEQ-5? The CG-5 is actually an EQ-4 and while it would be suitable, you could always do better smile Apogee's H.D. is the same as the CG-5, I believe.

If you want about as good a catalog of chinese mounts (and telescopes) as you could ever hope to find, check skywatchertelescope.com.

You could buy yourself a circuit works conductive pen. You can even solder to it if you're pretty good. It's manufactured by Chemtronics and you can buy it online or at most better electronics stores. I've used it before and it's a good product.

What sort of application is this that makes it so sensitive to heat that you can't solder a wire in? You could use a heatsink clip when soldering too, that would let you get at components that are particularly sensitive.

Don't forget to wire in a fuse this time smile

Tasco Torment

I've got a Tasco Starguide 4... made in the dark days when Celestron was a Tasco company. I bought it at a discount clearance store for a fraction of its new price after Tasco went bust. Yes, it's a Synta scope but I've been quite happy with the quality of the optics, electronics and mechanics.

If you're talking about the Synta HEQ-5 or EQ-6 when you refer to Markus you don't have to ship from Germany to get them. They're available in the States and abundantly available in Canada.

As for Apogee's mounts, most of Celestron's mounts, Orion's mounts and most of Meade's mounts. Guess who makes them all? Synta - mother of the HEQ-5 and EQ-6 smile For what it's worth, the HEQ-5 and EQ-6 are a breed apart from other, cheaper chinese offerings. Unbeatable for the money and high quality by almost any measure.

Newsweek Article on telescopes

I work at a large multinational and we recently moved into a new building. To christen it, employees were asked to name the meeting rooms and the employee chosen theme for the third floor was star names.

To make short story very short, not a single star name was voted in. Among the selections? Galileo, Andromeda, Quasar, Omega and some others that I can't quite remember. Not one star's name! My objections fell on deaf ears twice! Once when I pointed out before voting that there were names on the list that were not star names, and afterwards when I pointed out that not one room had been named after a star.

One would think that at least scientists and engineers would be better informed. One would be wrong.
