1100x for giggles and was decent. Usually like 200x for higher mag viewing.

Several thoughts come to mind. First, Strehl numbers are tested and calculated prior to a coating being applied. Diaganol also important.

Also mounting and support can be very important as is cooling.

What does the in focus star look like at very high power on a nite when you actually can see steady diffraction rings? With a turned down edge, your in focus stars will have "flairs" on them which looks like my astigmatism does but if your not astigmatic, you might not know what I mean. But numerous mini diffraction spikes emminating from the center of main diffraction spikes on a bright star.

I also think it's possible that tube currents and most definately upper atmosphere can affect star test iside focus. As when i swing away from test star and put that same focus on a planet, I can actually see the outer portions of the jet stream passing by, even if the seeing looks pretty steady.

I think there is still some appeal to film for astrophotography as you can get a GREAT result with limited funds and limited trouble, as long as you insure you have the basics down in getting the image such as focus, tracking, but then again, this is needed regardless of whether you are digital or not.

Yes there are some stunning dslr images out there, but they are from a $700+ camera, a gazillion short images stacked, aligned and processed up the wazooo, to get that result. If you look at your basic entry level image, it is pretty crude, little depth, not much color.

Now I don't profess to be any kind of expert, but as an example, the following image is a single 20 minute image with basically no processing scanned on my flatbed scanner from a print with a minor contrast stretch. The camera is a OM1, that is worth what, 50 bucks? This was first "guided" deep sky image.

By the way, I have a DSLR and I rarely use it for imaging other than moon shots as it is kind of a pain.
