I second Anthony,
The biggest scope I have looked through was a 16 inch dob at decent dark skies, it was a great view, but the best views I ever saw were in SUPER dark skies, probably mag 7, with our little 6 inch reflector. Although it didn't have the light gathering, the contrast was so much better in the transparent darkness

Bang for buck would probably be a newt, BUT, the tricky part is if you really want nice images, you'll need decent optics and a mount that tracks reasonably well. If you could snag a used SCT with a solid mount it might be the best for cheapest.

Where the user has a Lomo 150, he also owns a 8 inch sct and 10 inch dob, he says that the lomo 150 beats the others for deep sky and planets both! That the contrast is so great it shows more.....
